Great article kate!

Many colleges have established goals to pursue and admit low income students in order to have a more diverse student body. I’m glad to see that West Point was featured as the USMAPS option is focused on academic preparation and the success rate is high.

so do you have to be poor to get picked up for prep school?

Nope. Just need additional academic preparation - so it’s a great option for those whose highschools didn’t prepare them all that well either.

Most of those going to USMAPS are from the enlisted ranks that need to get caught up on academic preparation prior to going to the academy.

and you have to be of a special stupid sort to prep at NMMI

If you are put on the NWL than you are not eligible for any of the preps-is that right?

it said 230 people entered west point prep - is that including nmmi and the other civ prep programs?

RReed4202 -

There have been other candidates on the NWL that were offered prep. Sometimes this is the way the Admissions Committee banks great candidates for next year.

no, I was on the NWL when I was offered the prep spot.

demosthenes - from your prior posts I’ll assume that you are “a special sort of stupid” since you are at NMMI now.

But not to discourage other potential candidates that are offered a civil prep spot from AOG is a means to an end. And from hearing from others that have taken that route, incluing going to NMMI, it was time well spent.

Thank you Kate for the information. These threads are so informative…the website leaves a lot of mystery to the whole process.

going to nmmi is not a time well spent…it is suffering for a school year to go to USMA. Would I do it again??? no comment.

nmmi is truly a ridiculous school. academics are pretty good. corps-wise…this place is truly an unorganized failure. i am sorry if there are nmmi alumni here, but i truly hate this place from the bottom of my heart. i hate nmmi with a passion. you can say whatever you’d like…“oh then you’re gonna hate west point”
no…i hate the new mexico military institute. this place will make you mental-hence, the new mexico mental institute

did you have a choice between nmmi and a different prep school?

yes i did…but nmmi was closest and the tuition was the best…turns out nmmi just rips every cadet off in every possible way…schools owes me like $200 or something. if u have a choice…don’t come here…opt for marion or wentworth…
