Great College Essay Hooks Examples?

what do you guys think about “when failure punched me in the face…”

Unless you’re writing about a boxing match or some other time when you were literally punched in the face, I’d leave it out. The phrase sounds overdramatized, sensationalistic, etc. That’s just my opinion, though. :/

I agree with the above, but it is impossible to tell without the context of the essay. In general, the college essay should be honest and use good narrative techniques you see in short stories and novels, so unless it is for humor purposes, I’d avoid overexaggerating anything

This is a couple years old, but you said you wanted examples: <a href=“10 Great Opening Lines from Stanford Admissions Essays - CBS News”>http://www.cbsnews.com/news/10-great-opening-lines-from-stanford-admissions-essays/

Sounds a little too aggressive. The first sentence doesn’t necessarily need to give away the prompt. Let the words and details speak for themselves.

failure literally punched me in my face during high school i was being bullied a lot and one day this happened but thank you all so much @DiscipulusBonus‌ @shawnspencer‌ @LAMuniv‌ @WishfulWolverine‌
any thoughts on how i might rephrase it?

Like @WishfulWolverine said, you could leave it out entirely and begin by telling your story.

It sounds better in context, but it may still be too aggressive

I laughed too much at this. I’m sure in the essay it sounds fine, but maybe reword it to something like “I felt the blow of failure when yada yada yada”

Or the strike.
