Great Game!

I have come across this game which is located at FreeRice, it basically tests your vocabulary skills by supplying multiple choice definitions to test how vast your linguistics skills are. The best part is for each word you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated through the united nations to help end world hunger.

Great link! I only wish my son would have seen this when he was practicing for SATs! It’s fun and it’s for a good cause.

I got up to vocab level 48 before I started missing more than I was getting right. Made it up to 1200 grains, too!

lots and lots of GRE words in there too, great site :)

oh, thanks. this is addictive. I can get to level 42, and then go back down. So, I have to keep playing…

It’s a great idea, D is playing, and she has no interest in ‘studying’ for the SAT.

1100 pounds for me and then I knew I had to stop because I would be here tomorrow this time doing it.

What fun! I also got to level 42 and then messed up, but I was able to stop!.. for now…I think…;)

Most of these words are too obscure for the SAT. I got up to 1500 but tired and quit.

Fun. I aimed for 1000 grains of rice, but kept bouncing between level 44 and 45, so I had to go to 1010 so I could end at 45. :)

Well, I got to 2020 grains of rice by sheer persistence. But I got to level 46 and would miss and get dropped down to 41 or 42 or 43.

I hit 49, but mostly hover around 46.

49is as far as I got. It’s really addictive. :)

Just so we understand each other, not knowing what “lobscouce” is, doesn’t make me a bad person. :(

I got to 49 once, but couldn’t stay there. Latin and medical training are helpful. And crossword puzzles.

My S (Freshman in HS) introduced me to this game a few days ago. Without his help, I could only get to 42or 43. With his help, we got to 46. He took Latin and I speak Spanish, so that helps! Way to go, Bethievt, Mathmom and Parabella!!

bethie: You made me determined to get to 50, which I did. The words do not get harder. The numbers just represent how many in a row you get right. So, although it says vocabulary level, that’s not really true. I did donate 2500 grains of rice, so that’s what’s important.

I agree re the Latin. My four years of hs Latin really helped. Whenever I decided to ignore a Latin root, thinking it was a “trick” word and the Latin cognate not relevant… I was wrong.

And, mythmom, thanks for the explanation about words getting harder. I would come to some impossible word at, say, “Level” 41, then have a run of five or six fairly easy words marked “Level 45.”

mythmom, thank you for figuring out the scoring. Now I feel better for not being able to stay above 46 or 47. What a great game. If the political debate turns rancorous during Thanksgiving I’ll pull out the laptop and challenge everyone to see how they score.

dragonmom - lol that sounds like a awesome idea

Check out the “totals” tab on the site—it shows the total grains of rice donated per day; looks like the site came up on October 10. Evidence of a) power of the internet, b) addictive nature of the game, or c) all of the above? Now that we CC’ers have been told about it, and we encourage our hs kids to go to it to help their vocab, who knows how high it will go!!!

And reading Georgette Heyer novels. That was the only reason I knew a few of those words. :)
