Great story of American compassion

So here’s my experience trying to get a locker in the art building 4 weeks after classes have started…

Me: “Hi. I’m here to get a locker. I know that I’m suppose to have two art classes to get a locker. I only have one, but the class requires that I bring a ton of stuff. I’ve noticed that there’s still a lot of open lockers… and I would just like to see if I could get one.”

Locker-dude: “You have to be enrolled in atleast two art classes. You could pair up with someone and share a locker.”

Me: “I don’t even know anyone here, though. I’m majoring it something totally different and this is the first time I’ve taken an art class at this school… Plus, it’s 4 weeks into the semester and I’m assuming that everyone that wants a locker has already found a way to get one…”

Locker-dude: “… you don’t have any friends…?” (said in a condescending way)

Me: “I have plenty of friends, just none that take art classes.”

Locker-dude: “Well I’m sorry, but I can’t get you a locker unless you buddy up.”

Me: “Okay well, is there a lot of lockers left?”

Locker-dude: “Yeah, a good amount.”

Me: “And are you getting anyone else asking for one at this point?”

Locker-dude: “Not really.”

Me: “So can I have one? It’s not like I’m taking totally unrelated classes. I have an art class… I carry a portfolio around…”

Locker-dude: “Try buddy-ing up with someone in your class.”

… At that point I walked out. This guy is a student, put in charge on giving out lockers. Am I being a turd, or is this totally ridiculous. Yes, this is pretty much how the convo went, so It’s not very bias at all.

Needless to say, the art class I’m in is pretty small. I made an announcement at the beginning of class that I was in need a locker… and no one really wanted to help me (probably thinking I’d steal their stuff once I knew their combination… i don’t know).

I take public transit so I have to haul the portfolio along with all my art supplies around ALL DAY. very lame, especially as I’m walking past some unused lockers.

I’m just here to vent, thank you.

I wouldn’t take it up with “Locker-dude.” As you said, guy’s a student, and he probably didn’t make the rule. Find a higher up.

Yeah, stop talking to the locker dude. I also suggest someone higher up.

Heck your prof might even help you out.
