H and D would like to go sailing in Greece this summer. They have come up with a couple of areas to consider. I have not been to Greece since my 20’s. Back then I went to Athens and Mykonos and Santorini.
The two areas they have come up with are Milina and Vounaki. I don’t know anything about either place.
The little I know-
Milina- Sporades Gulf of Volos. Closest airport Volos
Vounaki- Ionian Sea. Prevesa Airport
They are pretty good at finding places they want to go but that is the extent of their involvement. All the planning and final decision making comes down to me. Hoping that a CCer has been to this area of the world and can offer some feedback.

Are you bareboating or chartering a crewed vessel?

bareboating.

What’s bareboating?

Bareboat: You rent the boat (usually furnished with living needs) and you do the sailing – assumes you’re a decent sailor and know how to read charts and how to be alert for weather issues.

Bareboating is when you are your own captain and crew. Like renting a car without a hired driver. Think sailboat or catamaran that sleeps one family. To H and kids it is an adventure and great way to see the world from the water. For me it is a trip that is as expensive as a highly rated hotel without maid or room service. It is not my passion but I do love the bond that my family gets on this type of a holiday.

As noted only for the experienced sailor. H grew up on boats. He has crossed both Pacific and Atlantic oceans via sailboat. Sailed from Florida through Panama canal to Ca. As a family we have bareboated BVI, St Martin, St Barts and Belize. I am 100% confident in H’s ability to keep us safe. No pirate infested waters for us.

About 10 years ago we chartered in the Ionian Sea, and absolutely loved it. Lots of fun little villages, each with the requisite taverna and bakery/general store. The pattern is to buy food each day for breakfast and lunch, then go out to eat on shore. Hikes and water sports in between. We flew into Prevesa and chartered in Lefkada, which is kind of a nice place to stay at the beginning and end. We hired a captain to get us through the first 2 days, and that’s not a bad idea if you’ve not experienced the stern-in docking process in Europe.

That said, they ought to consider Turkey’s west coast if they don’t have their hearts set on Greece. Far less overrun with tourists, and amazing relics everywhere you turn.
