Greek Architecture
Classical Greek art began around the Fifth Century B.C. It can be traced back to the architecture of the Minoans and Mycenaean who built many palaces such as the Palace of Minos at Knossos, and other palaces in the cities of Mycenae, Tiryns, and Troy. These buildings were later excavated by Heinrich Schliemann, a German archaeologist, and are believed to represent the Achaean culture.
Over the years the Greeks created a system of proportional measurement in order to manipulate the construction of any monument. For example, if they ,measured the front of a building to be four columns wide every other measurement for the building would be based on the previous measurement. This allowed the Greek to build The earliest monumental buildings in Greek architecture were the temples. Since these were solidly built and carefully maintained, they had to be replaced only if destroyed by fire, earthquake or an attacking enemy. The architectural orders, Doric on the mainland and Ionic in the Eastern Aegean were developed in the archaic temples, and they tended to make Greek architecture conservative towards changes in design or in building technology. In the succeeding archaic temples, the use of stone gradually replaced the use of wood, and some of the structural details of the early buildings appear to have been copied in stone.
