Leonardo DiCaprio flies private a lot all the while preaching that people should reduce their carbon footprint.
No surprise there. These type of people think they are special, entitled to do whatever they want, while the little people are the ones who need to cut back.
I can’t think of too many Hollywood celebrities whose opinions I care about when it comes to activism. The only two who come to mind when it comes to putting their money where their mouths are Angelina Jolie and George Clooney ( and I don’t necessarily agree with Clooney most of the time )
Yes, he’ll never be called out on it. Most of the celebs who preach conservation (Al Gore) don’t do it themselves. Ed Begley, Jr. may be the one exception.
Hey, Al needs that 20,000 sq ft house and those private jets. But you can keep your heat down, your air conditioning off, and stop eating beef, breathing so heavily, driving and keep your tires inflated, thank you very much! Better yet, ditch your car and use a bike. YOU don’t need to use a car or an airplane, cut back for the planet.
Agree that Jolie and Clooney seem to be putting their money where there mouth is. Most of the rest of them sure don’t.
Apparently she can’t drive herself anymore, so she has to get there somehow. May as well go in style if someone else is paying the bill.
Why would Leo hesitate when the uber eco guru has survived the inconvenient truth of his own extremely large carbon footprint.
Do as I say and not as I do has been the motto of those hypocritical windbags. If this not the environment, it is the education where those clowns a la Matt Damon defend public education in demonstrations but make different choices for their own.
Haha, I remember the school voucher fight.
Foreign donations too. It makes me feel sad.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Be mindful that this does not turn political, please.
They should read Emerson:
Oh come on now, cut the celebs some slack. All they are saying is that we little people need to make our meaningless carbon footprints smaller in order to make room for their more important big ones.
My biggest gripe is with the bags made of recycles plastic. I was given so many of them, 12 so far, I don’t don’t what to do woth them. I use two or three for groceries and other shopping but the rest I am stuck with. For a while it seems the only idea they had with recylced plastic was making bags, so many that we couldn’t use them all.
Oddly enough, it’s not just celebrities. In Britain, Green Party supporters are most likely to take long-haul flight vacations and rent cars rather than take public transport.
Remember a year ago or so when the U. N. had a climate change conference and flew hundreds of people to some island in the South Pacific? Really?
I think most us who care about the environment are Green Hypocrites. I recycle all packaging, bring my bags to the store, conserve water by letting my lawn go brown along with other conserving measures. On the other hand, I drive a car, I fly to see my family, and I live in a home larger than one really needs. Seriously, just because we don’t live like monks doesn’t mean we can’t take steps to conserve resources. It’s not an all-or-nothing enterprise. I think if everyone starts with what is easiest and tries to take little steps toward conservation, it can make a big impact.
Since I’m not a celebrity, I’m able to get away with my hypocritical behavior without much criticism.
However, moonchild, all the hypocritical behavior that you can possibly do in your lifetime, probably doesn’t add up to the damage caused by one trip in a private jet.
The LA paper today had an article on water conservation. Needless to say the biggest water wasters were the cities of Beverly Hills and Malibu, because of their large, watered acreage.
The difference moonchild is that you are not pretending to be holier than thou on the environment while some of these celebs are and are preaching at us on carbon footprints. Is it really so burdensome to fly first class rather than take a private jet?
I used to like Leo and Toby McGuire. Both so young and fresh faced… Then I found out about Leo’s posse. Being a green hypocrite isn’t his only flaw. If he claims to be a feminist he’ll be totally busted.
Maybe Leo will represent the US, after all his helpful work with women, in the various UN Women’s organizations. He can work along with the great promoters of equality for women, Iran and Saudi Arabia.
My observation is that the only people who ever call out celebrities for this kind of “hypocrisy” are people who disagree with the celebrities on the merits of the issue involved, and that they never call out the hypocrisy of people with whom they agree. So I tend to discount the views of both celebrities and those who call them out.
