He was wonderful in helping everyone else after accident. So, clear what was to happen to him. I enjoyed his thoughts while in hospital. Female doc got CT scan vetoed, then next doc waited for neurosurgeon for 1.5 hours–so who will be sued? I doubt that will be a story line at all. I thought the point was to show how much better Derek was as a doc than many others.
For me the best part of the episode was when the mom said, “Do you have a brother?”
Ugh…Not happy with that episode.
People have mentioned a couple problems with the show: Why doesn’t Meredith call anyone else and why is Derek the last to leave the scene? But how about – Why does his phone suddenly work?! (It didn’t work to call for help), and the whole time he was helping the others no other cars came…but then in that moment suddenly there’s a truck! And really? The neurosurgeon waits an hour and a half to eat dinner before arriving?
But mostly, just unhappy to see “McDreamy” go…
@mimk6 - yes! loved that line!
Well I still have a crush on Patrick Dempsey and always will…
I’m just freaking ticked off…just watched it. I just can’t believe they killed Derek. i so wish they had just ended the series. This really is just too much. I agree with the poster who says it ruins reruns…
so, who’s next…Bailey?
I sincerely hope they follow up on this episode. The Doc who was on call taking 1 1/2 hours, the Doc who insisted no CT. If they put that in the show, they should follow through with something, law suits?
The female Doc wanted the CT. And she was the one being scolded by Merideth??
But I am also really mad they killed off Derek. And I cried. Silly I know, but I cried.
I do not think they have replaced any of the actors that have left with anyone particularity interesting. They are boring. If they do not bring in someone with audience appeal, I think this show is on its last season.
I was way sadder when Dr. Greene died on ER. Of course, that was hardly a surprise!
I’m still stunned this morning they did that. I agree about all the newbies…just not interested in them. The only one they brought in lately, and that was just a guest role, was Geena Davis. I like Arizona and Owen…and that’s about it other than the original cast. And the Chief is just a shadow of what he once was. I’ll thought I wouldn’t watch when Christina left last year, but I did. It wasn’t terrible this year, but it’s a dying show…and now with Derek gone…I think one more season. Did she really kill McDreamy and McSteamy?
I cried too! But I enjoyed the flashback scenes. They looked so much younger!
Is Geena Davis gone? I thought she was just recovering from her surgery.
Well, I could see this coming a mile away. The doc who refused the CT scan was an idiot. You can always replace blood during the CT scan if you are concerned.
Would not the normal reaction for Meredith, the second she heard her husband was in an accident and it was serious, be to call her sister-in-law the neurosurgeon, in the hopes that there is something that could be done? Or to call any of her plethora of trauma surgeon friends? She didn’t know what she was going to really find at the hospital when the police came. Meredith is on the board of a hospital with a major trauma center. She has tremendous resources to draw on. Obviously, we knew it was already too late, but she didn’t know that when the police pulled up.
It is still bothering me that she did not kiss him before he passed. Or did I miss the kiss?
In a way, this episode was more of snapshots of events than telling a story. It is showing what happened after it happened rather than presenting it as it happens. I can’t still get over Meredith reaction when the police came to her house, “How can I go to the hospital? I have kids…” It’s not what anyone says when her husband was in accident and seriously injured. Another thing that struck me odd was Meredith showing up at the hospital pushing kids in a stroller. You’d think she could have gotten immediate help with a phone call.
The one thing that did seem realistic to me was Meredith saying she had kids and couldn’t leave them. I think it’s plausible that someone in that situation would be too paralyzed by fear to problem solve the child care issue. I think people often protect themselves in moments of great shock and dread by scrambling to find anything that will buffer them from what comes next.
Someone comes to my door when I’m alone with my kids and I would have had that same response. I thought it was quite reasonable that a mom would think of her kids first.
I’d have frozen with someone at the door saying “thee’s been an accident”. Its my worst nitemare.
Interesting perspectives. Wouldn’t a phone call solve that problem? The parity is too great; babysitting issue vs dying husband. E.very day chore vs life changing event
Igloo, how can you walk away from 2 toddlers?
Somehow, I missed who did come to care for the kids.
No matter how old my son becomes, I still worry when he flies or drives a long distance. Silly, really, because most accidents occur near home.
No, it’s not walking away from kids. I don’t know why anyone compares this to a choice between husband and kids. You are not asked to kill your kids to save your husband. Babysitting is just a chore. You could get a sitter, a neighbor, call Bailey or someone.
Meredith took her kids to hospital on a stroller. Once at the hospital a social worker takes over kids. It was also somewhat striking; Meredith pushing the stroller at the hospital as if she’s taking them for a walk. Maybe this is new existentialism. Life goes on no matter what.
I thought it was realistic that Meredith took the kids to the hospital. She was in a rush and it was faster to scoop them up and take them than to call someone, wait for them to get there, etc.
The Derek voiceover while he was incapacitated was good.
What was completely unrealistic was the accident. You don’t have to be a “brain surgeon!” to know that it would be extremely dumb to turn around on a highway and oh by the way stop mid-turn in the middle of the roadway to look at your phone.
There are so many repeat themes in this show…did this remind anyone of the way George went? Not to mention yet another plane crash, last week. Shonda and crew are running out of ideas for this one.
