Ground Transportation from White Plains, NY

I was looking up different flights for an overnight visit I’m planning at Yale, and I found a great deal on a nonstop flight to White Plains (which makes my parents feel better, no connections). Does anyone know how I could get from that airport to Yale?
TIA.

Since you said “my parents,” I’m guessing you’re doing this solo, and that you’re not yet 21 and can’t rent a car.
One decent option could be a cab to the White Plains train station, where you can get a Metro North train into Grand Central, and then another out to New Haven, and then a cab again to the Yale campus.

WP train station is far from the WP airport and you’d have to take a Metro-North train into NYC and switch to a Ct train. Major pain. Maybe take a cab to the nearest CT train station that goes to New Haven? Maybe Greenwich?

Muffy’s absolutely right. There have got to be stations on the New Haven line that are not too distant by cab. Just ignore my post!

from WP you can take a taxi to the train station in either Mamaroneck or Greenwich, whichever is cheaper, closer or fits your schedule better, get a train that runs to New Haven.

renting a car is the best option from HPN- about an hour’s ride to New Haven. if that’s not possible, an easier option may be to take a direct flight into Bradley (BDL) in Hartford- nice regional airport. most major airlines fly into bdl. you can take the CT LIMO shuttle one way into New Haven- for about $50 +/- & is about a 75 min ride. If you purchase a round trip, it’s cheaper. They will pick you up in baggage claim and drop you off at your airline’s gate on the way home. I think they will drop off at Phelps Gate at Yale if you reserve/request ahead of time. If not, a short taxi ride from the area near the train station will get you there.

From White Plains airport (HPN), you must take a taxi to train station about a 20-30 min. ride. Plan on bringing a very small overnight bag, as there is little room on these trains. The ride to Grand Central is about 30 min. once you get on the train. Then you have to find your track in GC to New Haven. The ride from Grand Central to New Haven is about 90 minutes or so. As other posters have mentioned -it’s a long, complicated ride.

Well, for the White Plains flight I would have saved some money and got a nonstop flight, but it seems like it would be pretty complicated ground transportation-wise based on what all of you guys are saying. I think I’m going to just fly into Tweed New Haven with connecting flights and take a taxi to campus. Thanks for all of your help!

I live in an area very close to white plains. Get a cab from White Plains airport to Mamaroneck train station (a 15 minute car ride at most) and then get a train to New Haven, which is about an hour and a half ride but will only cost you $18 or so round trip.

And you don’t need to get on a train from white plains to grand central. the white plains train station is out of the way of the airport, anyway. just go to mamaroneck, larchmont, or rye stations which will take you directly to new haven.
