Grounds for Rescission

Hey Everyone, I was fortunate enough to get into UC Berk this year and was 100 percent sure I wouldnt have any issues until this last week. I’ve been absent from school days a fair bit this year due to some personal things and all my teachers understand and have helped me out exept for my econ teacher. She refused to take my finished late assignment that I did from home since apparently “I proved I don’t need her class by not showing up”. Due to this I might get bellow a C in the class which is ground for resinsion accoridng to my acceptance letter. IDK why she had this sudden change of heart but I dropped off all my stuff on her desk on the late work deadline and it still hasn’t been updated as finished.

My other class grades are as follows (online grades are higher since I can do them from home).

Ap Chem online: 92
Ap Macro online: 90
AP Calc Online: 86
AP Lit online: 93
AP Physics 1 Online: 92
AP Physics 2 online: 91
AP CSA in-person: 92
Engineering 3 in-person: 93
Film in-person: 85
Advanced Comp: 88
AP Macro: Likely below a 70 due to the afformentioned refusal to accept missing work

I got in for Aerospace and as an OOS Student on a full tuition scholarship so if I get recinded its basically over since my local state school’s deadline for registration has passed.

Tagging some of our UC experts. @Gumbymom @ucbalumnus @worriedmomucb Hopefully they will have insight about Cal but it seems they were clear about the conditions of enrollment.
As an aside, I wasn’t aware UC had full tuition scholarships for OOS. If you don’t mind sharing, it would be helpful to know about when we help students in the future.

I also wasn’t aware any GA public schools had enrollment deadlines before May 1. Are you sure about that?

Have you spoken with your principal/head of school about this situation ?

Its not a UC Scholarship its a Army Rotc scholarship which I was really fortunate enough to get. Also apoligies I ment to say it will have passed by the time that I get my final senior year grades since uga registration is due on May 1st and my school / econ teacher can keep updating senior grades until may 5th. Plus its a lot of money to pay just to throw away if I dont end up going.

Gotcha! That makes sense. Thank you for explaining. Congratulations on the ROTC Scholarship and UCB acceptance!

Due to the time constraints, I agree with the other poster who suggested you meet with your high school counselor and/or administrator first thing Monday. Explain the situation and ask the counselor to meet with you and the Econ teacher ASAP to discuss your grade. You may be panicking for no reason, but do not delay addressing this with school resources as soon as possible.

Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the reassurance but a similar situation like this came up in my sophomore year with the result being the teacher being forced to accept the work but giving me all 50%'s when they were supposed to be completion grades causing my grades to tank. I’ll def speak to them but I don’t have high hopes. In a worst case scenario if I do get below a C would UCB understand or is it a hard below a C = recind? I’m not an exeptional student being in the 50th percentile of the class so I’m worried this might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

I’m not knowledgeable about the UCs which is why I tagged the users above for input. As a non-expert, I’d suggest you take the conditions of acceptance seriously and not expect an exception.

I am hopeful you can get an answer about your final grade by meeting with your teacher and counselor so you know what to do by May 1. Thankfully you do have a solid option if things do not turn out as you wish, but I am hoping for a happy update from you in a few days.

How much lower than a C? A C- or lower? If you can manage a C- you might be OK.

Getting below a C- (i.e. getting a D or F) is considered failing. If you fail econ you definitely risk rescission. You will be given a chance to explain the reasons and they will will consider it, but it will be hard to come back from failing a class.

I agree with the above - see if there is ANYTHING you can do to pass this class with at least a C- or better yet a C. If you manage a C- you will need to explain what went wrong and the steps you have taken to correct it (or the important lesson you have learned). There are no guarantees until they review your explanation, but you will have a better chance with a C- than if you get a D or F.

My school considers anyhting below a below an 80 but above a 70 as a C we dont really have + or - Grades. Biggest issue is we dont have a D grade and anything below a 70 is considered an F aka fail. It wont impact my graduation since I already took micro econ and got an A but yeah it would def look bad to UCB.

Failing a class is definitely grounds for rescission. As I said, you will have a chance to explain, and you should contact UCB admissions as soon as you know that you will fail - do NOT ignore the situation and send in your final transcripts without telling them. Tell them BEFORE they receive your transcripts because they generally don’t like these kinds of surprises.

However, if there is ANY chance to pass the class at this point, do whatever you can. Beg. Do extra credit. Do whatever it takes. Try your hardest to pass.

But if that doesn’t work, contact UCB admissions ASAP about the situation.

I hesitate to ask this…but do you have any other affordable acceptances at this point…in case Cal doesn’t work out. It doesn’t sound like UGA is affordable…or am I misreading that?

UGA could be made to work because of the georgia hope scholarship if I choose to attend but the deposit of hundreds of dollers makes us really hesitent to commit if this situation eventually gets worked out and the money just goes to waste. Unforutnatly I don’t have any other acceptances to fall back on as the 19 other applications I did were rejected including GT and the other UC’s.

@liltuiolpoi what is the enrollment deposit at UGA? Is it a huge amount?

600 dollars is what it shows on the portal which is a lot of money for us right now to throw away if this situation gets resolved. Plus my rotc scholarship has been transfered to UCB already so those benifits i would have gotten at UGA before are now gone and hope only covers tuition not housing or the rest.

You aren’t going to know if you are rescinded from UCB by May 1, when UGA deposit is due. You could contact UGA and ask if they can reduce your enrollment deposit. Have you paid UCB deposit?

If you let UGA go, and then are rescinded by UCB, what is your plan B? Is it possible to change your ROTC scholarship back to UGA?

Is UGA affordable with just the Hope Scholarship…or not?

UCB waived the deposit for us so it wasn’t an issue and I’ll take you advice and contact UGA tomorrow to see if the deposit can be reduced. For ROTC i was told it’s possible but may not be likley as the UGA unit may be filled by then leaving no more scholarhsip slots left for transfer.

If worst comes to worst I was thinking just bite the bullet and enlist in the guard like I was planning to do at first and reapply next cycle.

I would also get your parents involved, have they talked with the teacher, counselor, or admin at all about this?

Yes they’re the first people I told and they were livid. They sent an email requesting a meeting with the counselar on monday and got really upset when I told them what she said about my acceptance. They are trying their best to help me out right now.
