Group projects/artsy shoebox-esque projects

Do boarding schools assign them often?
Note: I don’t mean you can’t have ART projects in ART. I mean will your lit teacher ask you to create a poster, or your french teacher make you bake a cake and describe it in french? And group projects is self explanitory I think.

I guess group projects wouldn’t be as bad at boarding school-the large majority of the group would care about their grade as much as you do, I’d think. Still they can be annoying at times, as can the above poster/cake type thing. What does baking a cake teach me about French? Not much. Describing it may, but I’d rather do it in an essay (obviously, I’m not artistic).

So, does anyone with experience know if they often assign those types?

I’ve never done like… artsy shoebox projects at Exeter but we have a lot of group projects… most labs are in groups so you get the data together but you write your own report. Sometimes there are skits in language classes… debates in history…

I think it really depends on the school. I mean I supose you’s ge6t them alot at artsy schools, but not so much at more traditional ones.

I don’t know if this counts as artsy, but I think my last year of French at Andover has been pretty artsy… We would mostly watch films, eat crepes (one of the other classes spent a large part of the year making crepes to raise money for a Haitian community, but I digress), make up short plays based on these films – with costumes and everything. Other than French though, all my classes have been pretty straightfoward thankfully, since I frankly just hate working with other people on graded projects. In AP Euro, I had to give a speech on Chartism from the point of view of a peasant in Manchester, but that was just once, and that class is… not your average class.

Honestly, I think it depends on the kinds of classes you’re taking… with the exception of one Calculus class that ended up writing an essay/proof on whether or not Cady was right on the limits question in Mean Girls, math and science classes are going to be pretty independent and traditional. In my experience, English and History classes are the same. Foreign languages… yeah, they’re probably going to make you do a skit or two.

Mostly would agree with SsPixie17x. My teachers sometimes consider assigning group projects, but they appreciate how busy we are and how difficult it is to meet, so they rarely do.
