I don’t have the gorgeous dark hair with gray at the temples like a few of my friends.
From 15 to about 30, I wished I had striking mediterranean features & the personality to go with. ( but while my grandmother was more that type, the rest of us were solidly germanic/scandinavian)
It was years before I recognized that my strawberry blond hair was actually quite pretty & it was Ok to be * cute* instead of a bombshell.

I started putting henna on it, to make the color just a little deeper & for shiny. ( plus I love making a mess- )

But I recently noticed that I could see my roots! I didn’t want to be one of those poor ladies who seemed oblivious to having different colors on their head ( & I didn’t want to have to start doing it more often). So I stopped using the henna.
The roots aren’t grey, they seem to be golden blonde about 2 or 3 shades lighter than the red.

I suppose I could go & get " foiled" to have it blend in better- but I am trying to do it myself without using bleach. ([I’m using 10N which is taking out a tiny bit of color at a time]( http://naturtint.com/) ) It isn’t drying out the ends, so that is a plus, & I have been trimming my hair as well- but I am going to be po’ed if I go through all this and decide that I don’t like it!

Is anyone else in the middle of this process?

While I have other color “issues” with my hair, I have had a couple of friends who were blond/strawberry types who had their hair highlighted in a way so that as it grew out they never had a line of color change, it was terrific! But I am sure this is not something you could do at home. Although by doing it that way they had far fewer trips to the beauty shop.

When I was growing my hair out from chemo (yes, it is different but in some ways the same) I didn’t like the color that I was seeing. The hairdresser (a good one) is your friend. They will explain your options and make the hair look natural or …whatever you choose.

I would definitely recommend weaving (with foil). I’m a blonde with no gray so I have my hair colored about every 3 months. I usually have three colors weaved in - light blonde, copper and a darker blonde and it looks very natural.

I was hesitant to go that route, because I had it done once when I wanted to have definite contrast in my hair & I went to a recommended salon where I spent almost $ 200.
Unfortunately, even though she took the same amount of time that it would have taken for what I wanted, it all was one color & looked mousy- plus dried out my hair.

I suppose I could have gone back to have her fix it, but I was afraid of it turning to mush. ( plus the music was so loud I don’t think I could have stood it)
:p

However- I don’t have to return to the same place- there is a place near me that has more reasonable prices, and even offers organic & ammonia free color so perhaps I will give them a try.

Go into the salon and talk to the staff before you make the appointment. Many times they will give you a free consult. Tell them what you want and don’t ever be afraid to let them know when you do not like it. As far as price, there are many younger/junior stylists that will not cost as much that are just as good.

I’ve been growing my hair out for about a year now and I absolutely hate it. I have naturally dark blonde/dirty blonde hair with blonde highlights in it. My hair grows pretty quickly. The last time i had it trimmed and highlighted was in September and my blonde highlights are grown out about 5 or 6 inches now. It’s not tooooo noticeable as it’s still a blonde head, but I made an appt on March 4th to get it cut and re-highlighted. My friend from work has her own hair cutting business that she does on the side. She’s great and only charges 45 dollars for a cut style and highlights. Do you know anyone personally that does something similar? I know for what I have done it would be well over 100 at the local salon.

oddly enough, I have several local musicians " friended" & many of them have day jobs. One man who I had only seen singing lead for a Queen tribute band, I found out also does hair. I researched him & he is apparently good, reasonable & seems to be very attentive.

Good luck! My BF asked me if I’d grow my hair out so he can see it long. Well now he’s seen it so I can cut it off again! I hate the way it looks but he loves it! He better take a picture because in two weeks it will be back to normal!!! :)
