Growing out my hair - need help!

My hair is below my shoulders, but puffs out like the picture when it’s humid or if I’ve been active, slept on it a few days, or brush it. (Brushing is a No-no.) It is calm and wavy if I shampoo, use leave in conditioner, and then mousse. For my texture, using enough conditioner is key. I didn’t do anything special with clips as it grew out, just kept it super conditioned.

Yes, I agree with the suggestions of trying some new hair products. I like this one as it isn’t as oily as some of the other oil-type products out there. https://www.amazon.com/LOr%C3%A9al-Paris-Extraordinary-Transforming-Packaging/dp/B0194HSHZE

Also look at some wider head bands maybe - they are called yoga head bands online.

@bookworm and @jym626 - can y’all suggest a specific argon oil product and how you use it?

I do have an issue with flyaways, but because my hair is straight and fine I wouldn’t want a product that weighed it down and made it flat. I have never heard of argon oil, so I would love to know more. I typically use products that enhance volume. Would argon oil work against that goal if used as an additional product?

I have no brand loyalty. I put a little in my hands and run my fingers over my hair. Too much would definitely effect the volume, but I use a little cuz of the flyaways

Not all argan oils are created equal. Kerastase products for the win for me.

These products are specifically formulated for hair applications.

LOL! I’ve been cutting my bangs but the sides and back are longer than they’ve been in decades. I believe this is called the “awkward stage.” At least we don’t have braces, glasses and emerging acne.

Slick it back with some gel (or brylcreem!), a little light make-up and some nice hoopy earrings, and you are good to go!

I use this brand https://www.ulta.com/renewing-argan-oil-of-morocco-penetrating-oil?productId=xlsImpprod2690029 I have both the renewing oil (also put a small dab in my hand, rub it together and entry run it through or dab my hair (after it is almost dry) with it. Too much and it will be too oily. There is also a spray version but it just seems like a watered down version of the oil.

It is highly unlikely most products touting argan oil contain much if any, they are usually silicone with enough argan to put on the label. See the ingredients in the Ulta for example, it is just marketing LOL

“This rare formula has a centuries-old history”
(Ye olde silicone from the olde timey times)

“Cyclopentasiloxane Dimethicone CYCLOMETHICONE D4 C12-15 alkyl benzoate Butylphenyl methylpropional Linum usitatissimum oil Fragrance (Irritating to eyes) Argania Spinosa.”

It is cheap and cheerful so no harm but what you like is the 'cones, not the oil.

I sometimes use the paste meant for spiky bangs - just a tiny bit warmed up on the my fingers, and then patted down along my part to stick the worst of it down.

About 3 weeks in to quarantine, DH helped me dye a whole 2" band of my hair nearly blonde ( my hair is mostly dark auburn) as a lark – sort of Cruella deville. We have fun admiring the time passed as my roots grow in …

Again though, look at the ingredients list;

“Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Cocos Nucifera Oil / Coconut Oil, Tocopherol, Eugenol, Benzyl Salicylate, Benzyl Alcohol, Linalool, Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Geraniol, Rosa Canina Flower Extract, Citronellol, Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil, Parfum / Fragrance.”

The major ingredients are 'cones and then cheap as chips coconut oil with a cheap ester
e.g

You could literally throw this together and make a liter for less than you pay for 100mls. It isn’t even complex. I probably wouldn’t even bother with a preservative as you add no water, just use fractionated coconut oil not solid.

I think the way to grow out hair is to have it trimmed at each length. Get that length to work and then grow out to the next level.

My hair had been growing since 3/3 when I had my last haircut. I liked it but it was longer than usual, so at three months it was really longer. Finally got it cut and decided I could not grow out the gray because it wasn’t really gray enough (some is white, some is still dark, and I just plain don’t like it).

Embrace the Madam Hooch look!

I am also growing my grey hair out. The awkward stage of growing out my bangs is almost over, but bobby pins have helped. I can now put it in a little ponytail, and the stuff that doesn’t make it into the ponytail looks kind of cool hanging out. I have to use conditioner to keep my hair from frizzing, but pretty much anything that isn’t real “heavy” does the trick. My H is also growing his grey hair out, and it’s pretty cool!

I stopped coloring my hair in 2017 and cut it super short that fall. It’s taken forever but is finally just hitting my shoulders in a bob style. It helped to trim the back bottom layer every 4-6 weeks in the beginning, allowing the top layers to catch up, then extend trims to every 8-12 weeks. My hair is super fine and I do have a stubborn section in the back on top that seems to refuse to grow that I ignore as I grow out the rest (hoping it will blend in).

I love hats for bad hair days. I’ve tried all sorts of products and recommend: 1. Sulfate free shampoo. Some are expensive but I have found Renpure on Amazon which I find to be reasonable. 2. VO5 Silver Hairdressing - a very old product that my mother use to use that tames frizz, adds shine and depth. (Also found on Amazon.) I will say I don’t like the smell at all but it wears off in minutes and the results are better than anything else I’ve tried. (Just be sure to use a tiny, pea size amount and avoid your roots or your hair will look greasy.)

Good luck!

OMG - I just took a break from my work emails to check CC and this just sent me into hysterics! Thank you so much for the laugh and I could be your twin!!!

DD razed all my hair off to a 1” length at the start of Covid season, and now 4 months later, it is in that difficult stage and I am feeling some regret about having cut it. She offers to trim it but… no, no, no! (We all had a laugh-fest as she cut DH’s hair, and it will take a month or so for his baldish side bits to grow out! But the laughter was definitely worth it.).

My hair is “salt and pepper” and wild and too thick and Wodgy, but this is Covid time and there are very few people who will see it or care, including me. I wonder how long it will take to get to my shoulders? 2021?

I have very curly hair that is thinning, which means it frizzes with any excuse (humidity, jogging, etc.) I use lots of hair gel and leave in conditioner, and sleep on a silk pillowcase to cut the frizz.

If it looks awful when I get up, I just run damp hands through it to reactivate the products.

I did buy some hair product at CVS and gave it a try.

They didn’t have any argan oil type products, so I just got something innocuous and inexpensive.

Using it does bring down the fluff factor quite a bit.

I also got two hairbands, but I think they are too hot for me. I may try wearing one on calls for work.

@fendrock , how are the headbands hot??? Maybe we can recommend another option. I wear my headbands to NOT be hot!
