Gruber's Strategies

I just took a Gruber’s SAT book from the library and have started glancing over some of the math strategies, since I heard they had a really good math section. For most of the math techniques, however, it recommends you to reduce, factor, do other “tricks” etc when in reality all you have to do is multiply a few numbers and then divide. Should I just bypass these tricks and do some of the practice problems?
