"Guaranteed Transfer Option"

Okay but I will receive the credit for the classes that I had taken in my previous school, right? But Cornell not averaging the grades from the classes in my previous school, will that harm me in Cornell, in terms of receiving scholarships?

that’s correct, the credits will still be counted. In terms of scholarships, it really depends on the condition of the scholarships.

Well, I thought I’d check in and see how fellow Cornell GTers are doing with the process… like picking out classes, working out the schedule with Ian (if you’re gonna be in ILR) for freshman year, etc.

So far, it’s been pretty good for me. It looks like I’m only going to be able to take 3 out of the 5 courses recommended by ILR (Econ, Writing, Western Intellectual Tradition), but Ian assures me that it’s perfectly okay. And apparently we’ll get some stuff in the mail within the next week or so with more info about GT and what we should be doing.

Anyways, best of luck to all GTs, hope we can all keep in touch throughout the GT process!

is it hard for a GT to graduate in honors?

no, most transfers do graduate with honors

It was something like the top 20% in the class get to choose if they wanna do an honors project. So that is completely up to u!

-edit - this is from the ILR handbook

“Undergraduates who are ranked in the top 20% of their class at the end of the junior year may propose a two-semester research project, an honors thesis, for review by the Committee on Academic Standards and Scholarships. When approved, the candidate for graduation with honors works for two semesters (for 4 credits each semester) to research, write, and then defend the thesis.”

there is a difference between doing honors and graduate with an honors project and graduating with (Latin) honors, which one were you asking about?

oh, i’m asking about graduating with latin honors.

Wat’s the difference?

Hey I found this thing on new student orientation events/requirements, great stuff lol we’ll probably get it in the mail tho!

graduating with latin honors is determined by your GPA, and most transfers do graduate with latin honors, and it is different for every college.

graduating with an honors thesis is writing a thesis about a research topic, and three faculty has to read it and approve your paper. With that your diploma actually says with honors in research.

Oh…do u have any idea what that gpa is around? I only know about the honors project and deans list.

I remember a while ago gomestar said gts see a large initial drop in their gpa…so how do so many transfers get honors?

“gts see a large initial drop in their gpa” ;( I’m scared…ehhh

I know for CALS, there are three latin honors, one is at 3.5, 3.75, and 4.00.

Transfers do see an initial drop in their GPA, but remember you still have from 4 to 6 semesters here at Cornell. Once you get used to how things work around here transfers do extremely well in their classes.

thanks for the info! one more question though: can gts apply for study abroad programs or other study groups in u.s?

Of course! I can’t even wait!

Hello, GTs!

I just wanted to report back in to the boards that my S (a Cornell 2011 GT-1) graduated from h.s. this weekend! I thought other GTs might like to know that when they put his plans for college in the paper with the list of everyone else’s, they put Cornell instead of his first-year college. We are delighted, since this expresses his true plans and that he has a position at Cornell that is more sure than going somewhere else first, then hoping to transfer to Cornell. His transfer is GUARANTEED, and he worked hard for that position! I know some students on the GT boards have been wondering about awkward moments like that–what college to put down for various things, when asked, so I thought this tidbit might be helpful to other GTs down the line.

How are the 2010 and other 2011 GTs doing? I know the 2010 GTs are probably back home and/or working/interning now for the summer. Cornell awaits you! Hang in there; you’ll be there soon! I’m still hoping to follow the progress of all you 2010 GTs when you get to Ithaca in a couple of short months. I’m eager to hear how your transition goes from your first year college to Cornell. You’re trail-blazers for those coming after you, like us–keep your sights set high, and many, many thanks again for all of your generous support and encouragement to the shaky and uncertain GTs coming after you!!!

–Dr_Mom

Wow congrats to ur son! That’s great that he put Cornell down.

Ya I’m working as a waitor for weddings as well as job shadowing the vice president of this huge corperation whos the general manager of the business he’s in (there are 30 business’ in the corperation so he is the head of one of the 30…and the most successful of them). He pulls in about 1.5 mil annually per employee in his business so he is super successful and I’m really excited about this opportunity.

We all got our housing assignments for Cornell and I’m definitely excited! I’d actually like to experience the school behind all the paperwork and dreams haha

Figgy–Where are they housing the GTs and other transfers next year? Is it on West Campus? Oh, and my S tries to explain the whole thing (still) sometimes when he’s asked, but more and more it’s just getting simpler to just say Cornell. This is true, even though he has orientation at his year-1 school already! in a few days. The thing for the newspaper, we think, may have been submitted by the guidance office, so we were pleased, because they do know the situation! Congrats on the job shadow–that sounds cool and like you’re making a good contact there!

I am on West Campus but most will be on North in Hasbrouck (prolly spelled that wrong lol). I got lucky and am in a newer dorm while they rebuild a transfer center. But I am still on a floor with all transfers so it’ll be nice!

Good for him! If he is as motivated as it seems then I am sure he will definitely be at Cornell in a year and have an absolutely amazing experience throughout college!
