diehldun–I think staying at USC would be perfectly understandable. New York is a big change from California; you’ll already be at a great school, etc. etc. I’m sure you’ll know pretty clearly in a year what feels right. It doesn’t sound like too many people waffle back and forth with the GT–they kind of know what they want to do–at least that’s my sense of it. Our S, for example, didn’t choose his 2nd choice school for the GT mainly for the reason of staying motivated to go to Cornell–he is that set on it. He kept saying things like, “I might be too tempted to stay, and I want to make sure I make use of this opportunity.” But he also thinks he’ll be happy at his Year 1 school, too.

Were there other reasons other GTs at your school brought up about maybe not making the transfer next year? And, I’m curious–why, do you think, did the conversation make you feel sad?

Just wanted to offer 2011 GTs another dose of encouragement and pass along a hello to the 2010 GTs who will soon be arriving in Ithaca in August. The 2010 GTs, the ILR folks in particular, have been so kind to the new GT families here on the CC Boards. I want to thank you, yet again!!

We went to Cornell’s Commencement yesterday, and the ILR undergrads. were a lively bunch when they processed into the stadium and especially when they were recognized as a group on the field. They made me think of you and your friendliness here! I think you’re all going to have a great time at Cornell once you get there! I’m sure graduation from Cornell seems like lightyears away for you right now, but that happy day is definitely out there waiting for you–just keep up the hard work!

btw: Rain was threatened, but it held off until later in the afternoon and was then just a passing shower. Not a drop in the stadium!

Thanks, again, Class of 2010 GTs! Hopefully, our Class of 2011 GT sons and daughters will be joining you on campus in Fall, 2008. Your success with the GT program gives us hope!

Dr_Mom: I’m glad the commencement went great (and no one got rained on lol)! I’m still working on fully accepting the fact that I’m actually going to Cornell, and to think about graduating from such a great school…frankly, it all seems like a dream to me, even at this point lol thank you for all your encouraging words, you are very kind :)

aw ur great Dr. Mom! It sounds like commencement went really well! I can’t even wait to go to Cornell. I’m sure all of you future gts will do just great! C all u gts there!

I have heard a rumor that those are doing pre-med and are transferring to Cornell under the GT plan, their grades from their previous college won’t be averaged in Cornell. Is this true? If the grades are not averaged into a Cornell gpa, will they be averaged when it’s time to apply to medical school? Please confirm this.

Of course they aren’t averaged…that would mean someone could come with a 4.0 from a community college and have a higher gpa than someone with a 3.6 from Cornell.

They aren’t averaged…for anything. They will just show up on the transcript seperately (as far as I know).

Hope that helps!

So the grades from the school that you attended before Cornell wont be averaged when someone is applying to medical school. If that is the case, then that may hurt people who screw up in Cornell after transferring. Is this common in all college transfers that your previous grades from your previous college won’t be averaged. Weird, but whatever.

Also if that is the case in Cornell, then it does not make sense for people who are doing pre-med to transfer because they will be in an overall disadvantage when applying to medical school. Besides the underlying questions that will bombard them about transferring, but also the fact that their gpa’s will probably be lower than those of other students in the applicant pool.

not if youre a pre-med ILR transfer.

What about a CALS pre-med GT?

The GPA from your last school is not calculated into your GPA from Cornell, but that grade still matters when you are applying for med/grad school because they want to see all your transcripts from all your schools.

For med school, when you are filling in the application you have to put in ALL your grades, but you will not graduate Cornell with your previous grades calculated into your GPA. I hope that makes sense to you guys.

P.S. I have never heard of a pre-med ILRie.

So does that mean that I will not be in any disadvantage when it comes to average because all grades will be looked at. So me transferring in no way screws up my chances of applying to medical school unless I really screw up in Cornell?

^ yup that’s right. They don’t average them in (because that would be really unfair) but the med school still sees the grades. So do well in Cornell as well and you’ll be fine!
