"Guaranteed Transfer Option"

diehldun–Our S is not in ILR, so maybe that’s why you didn’t get the same message as he did. My impression was that they would send the papers quite a while from now, not right away. Hope this helps! How is your year going so far?

Can GT’s post their stats…when a GT’s offered??? In ED or at RD?

GT is offered…u don’t apply for it. So i wouldn’t even think about a gt unless u get one. But it’s offered RD (which includes defered ED people) and to some waitlisters

thanks figgy!

Dr Mom - Our D is ILR GT and just moved to Cornell last month. She did her first year at UC Davis which is about an hour away from our home in SF, so the move to Ithaca has been a big one for her.

collegemom4, how was your daughter’s first year at Davis? Funny, because a friend of mine (who also has an ILR GT) is there at Davis, and is worried about liking it too much there to switch after a year.

Thanks, collegemom4. We live in the same general area of New York State as Ithaca, and the weather has been fine since the colleges started back. Fall here is one of the best times to be in the area. Keep in touch with how your D likes winters, though! Wow–that IS quite a move from coast to coast for her GT. I give her credit for making that big decision to follow-up when doing so meant such a big move. Kudos!

Thanks diehldun and Dr Mom -

As for Davis, D had pros and cons (as any school). She felt academically it was lacking - huge classes, non-english speaking instructors, no academic advising, couldn’t get classes she wanted (needed for Cornell), 3 students crammed into a closet-size room meant for 2, etc. But she had friends from the start because many of her high school classmates went there. But the kicker ended up being that she got a boyfriend - yikes! It was a very difficult choice for her to leave him and go to Cornell (they’re trying to make it work from long distance-we’ll see). We left the decision up to her but I’m sure she knew deep down that we’d be disappointed, not for giving up on Cornell, but for changing her own path to follow the path of a boy at 18 years old.

Dr Mom, D said today that it was “freezing” outside. Can’t wait to hear from her in January! Another disadvantage to being at Hasbrouck is the distance to the Student Health. D had a fever a couple of days ago and wanted to go to the Health Center, but he bus only worked at that time of day once an house and it was too far to walk. Not serious this time, but I could see it being tough in the winter.

One of my friends who is a gt came from Davis too…that’s so strange that so many are from Davis haha.

It’s still nice out…if she thinks it’s cold now I’m afraid for her…lol

Oh Figgy (or other GTs), I forgot to ask you: has it been easy meeing and making friends as a transfer? Are most of your “new” friends also transfers/GTs, or second-year students?

Quick question – I’m a GT to CALS for Fall 2008 and I’m going up to Cornell (I’m from the DC area) with my parents in late October for a visit. Since I’ve already been offered the GT option, is there anything special I should do during my visit (for example, meet with someone at CALS admissions) other than the traditional college visit stuff?

Or, admissions-related things aside, is there anything that you consider a must-see at Cornell that many visitors miss out on?

Thanks in advance!

deih: It’s been insanely easy meeting people. Meeting people in ur O-group, classes, and floor are the easiest ways. I have good friends from all 3. Clubs are also a good way…but those are more of casual friends unless u pursue the friendship. Just pretend it’s freshman year again and be super outgoing.

indi: Definitely make sure to visit the gorges if it’s nice out (which I’m skeptical about since it’s late October lol)! Ask students for the best spots.

I’d also meet with the person in charge of ur transfer if u can (I never got to but that would be nice…get some good advice and everything). If u want restaurant recommendations or dining hall recommendations definitely ask on here or ask students. If u have any friends here give a party a try too.

Also check what events Cornell is throwing…u never know what amazing thing could be happening while ur here!

Hello! I have a guaranteed transfer to Cornell for the school of Arts and Sciences, but I haven’t heard anything since the actual letter that offered me guaranteed transfer. I’m getting a bit worried as we’re coming up on October. Can anyone re-assure me that this is normal, or should I call them to ask what is going on? Thanks so much for your help!

You shouldn’t worry b/c the actual app is mailed to you in late December/early January and it is due in March. You can always email them. I am a GT to CALS though and they sent me an email in Sept saying they will send out the apps soon.

Ooh! I will actually be at home in NYC around that time. That should be exciting. So I guess around second semster, we’re supposed to confirm our first semester grades by having our professors sign them? Then when do we hear back from them next about acceptance/rejection? (i hope acceptance  ) In other words, will be be at any disadvantage in terms of housing compared to “regular” appplicants/acceptees?

It’s been in the 70s a lot lately, with lots of sun. Some thundershowers lately, too. October is one of the best months to be in the Ithaca area–sunny, warm days, cool nights, beautiful fall colors! Tourists flock to the Finger Lakes’ vineyards, farmer’s markets, pumpkin farms, and apple orchards. The gorges and waterfalls–beautiful any time of the year–take your breath away in the fall. Come on up (or over) for a visit! ;)

Ya don’t worry there isn’t that much communication in the beginning of the gt process…because frankly wat is there to communicate about? lol. But ur now in the smooth running machine so just don’t worry about it b/c everything is under control.

and you don’t get the confirmation for a pretty long while…u have to have already sent in ur grades from the 2nd semester (in progress…not final) b4 they can confirm is from what I remember…so just sit tight.

And transfers have floors in west reserved for them as well as Hasb so don’t worry about competing for housing with regular students.

Dr_Mom - those are some great suggestions for places to check out during the visit! Thank you so much–I’m sure my parents will appreciate your insider tips as well. :)

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll be visiting Ithaca during spring break… :(

Okay, I might as well ask some questions that have still been bothering me about the GT process (well, not bothering), which might have been asked before but I can’t find them; I understand some of them might be a bit technical, but I don’t want to be bugging Ian with non-essential e-mails!

I know (for ILR) that you have to send in the first semester grades (around January/February?) and also in-progress grades for second semester… so obviously your professors/TA’s will know soon. But how about roommate’s/”friends”? When do you tell them about the situation? If you tell them when you tell your professor, that might alienate yourself from everybody else if word-of-mouth spreads. But if you tell them later (like, how late is late?), that might not look so good either. I also don’t know how you go about telling people: mind you, I’m at a place where school spirit is a REALLY REALLY BIG deal. Ever since I’ve gotten the letter telling me about my GT, I’ve been concerned about this.

Housing. Figgy, you said that transfers have floors reserved in West/Hasbrouck, but are there any singles available to transfers? Is it possible to get one? If not, does Cornell do a roommate compatibility-search to find good matches?

It’s a bit early to be asking this, but do professors (lecture) or TA’s (discussion + graders) sign off the grades for Cornell? And, if I’m in a one-semester credit/no-credit seminar that Ian has already confirmed will not be eligible for transfer, does the professor (who is the school president) of that still have to sign it too?

I like it here where I’m at right now, but it’s honestly not the most academic college environment. Granted, I know the drinking/frats situation at Cornell has been flogged to death, but…

And what’s Cornell/Ithaca like around mid-March? I’ll be heading up there during spring break to get to know the campus and environment better, and to finally meet Ian. I’ve heard it really varies… can either be very nice or still very cold/cloudy? Thanks a bunch!
