"Guaranteed Transfer Option"

Hey Dieh, it’s cool always feel free to ask any questions you have (but not in a way sexy did haha)

Okay I can tell you what I did about friends. I told them about half way into 2nd semester or maybe a little earlier…I can’t quite remember. It was insanely hard to do…but necessary. So I waited and it ended up working out even though a few of em were kinda mad cuz they felt like I had indirectly lied to them. That week sucked sooo much tho cuz they were all really sad that I was leavnig. But since it was Cornell I was going to they ultimately understood. The hardest thing was that one of my friends wanted to room with me and I would always avoid talking about it…but when I told them about the transfer situation he admitted that he wanted to transfer too and I was one of the only things keeping him there so he ended up transfering too (missed his family, gf, friends from home, ect…). It was really hard to tell everyone…but now that I look back the whole year was all worth it. I was always worried that telling them early would make them not wanna be great friends with me but some people did tell their friends early and it went fine. lol it was ridiculous tho…I decided the day that I would tell them but then didn’t actually tell them to a month later…haha it was so hard to pick a time to tell them! It’ll suck…as you can imagine…but it was ALLLLLL worth it. I am SOOOO happy to be here right now! Last year was a lot of fun and I had a great experience but I can’t picture myself being back there right now…Cornell is just too amazing.

ps ur professors probably won’t care. Every single one of mine was actually extremelllly happy for me. They were all really excited that I was going to Cornell. My professor/advisor even gave me a high five lol.

I don’t know much about Hasb but on West there are suites with 3 singles and a double each and then lots of singles lining the hall…so finding singles on west is no problem…it’s what most rooms are. I’m not sure about the roommate compatibility since almost all of my friends live in singles.

I didn’t have TAs so I can’t help you with that.

I had a one credit course as well where it was just to make us come together and like the college. I didn’t get that signed off on cuz it was a pass/fail weird course where we just talked about the summer reading book and never got graded.

I didn’t realize until now how much of the college experience I was missing. It is absolutely AMAZING that you can have intense intellectual debates with almost anyone here and that that’s normal. Everyone at my old college was really apathetic but I’m really into politics, the world, and human rights so I loooove it here cuz most people aren’t apathetic. For example I just went around having people sign a petition for Darfur and like 1/3 of the people who signed said that they did petitions in highschool for Darfur and out of all the people who signed only 2 didn’t really know about it. Everyone here is aware and it’s great…that NEVER would have happened at my old school. Everyone here is also really smart so you get pushed and it’s amazing.

The night life here is amazing whether you drink or not. For drinkers it’s obvious why it is (and it definitely is) and for non drinkers there are a lot of programs since this is such a big university. And since it’s also an intellectual place there are a good amount of people who don’t drink or party so you won’t be as alone as you might be at a less serious place.

If it is nice when you come then you will be absolutely amazed. When everything starts to bloom (like when I visited) Cornell is absolutely breath-taking.

human rights?

lol

ya as in that little ol thing everyone deserves.

lol ill always think ur stance is crazy lol

i don’t want your human rights you burmese dictator! move to tibet and drink your bubble tea in oppression!

You’re very welcome, indigo451! I hope you enjoy your visit! It is currently in the high 70s today (Oct. 3), with bright sunshine!

diehldun–I hate to tell you, but I think March (and November) are actually the worst months around here–gray between-the-seasons months. March can’t decide between winter and spring (and Nov. between fall and winter), and there are few colors (flowers or leaves). All I can say is, be prepared for unpleasant weather and/or gray scenery, but know that you will probably be seeing the worst of it! (unless, of course, you don’t care for snow, in which case, deep snow would be worse. We can get snowstorms in March as well). Wish I had better news! You can look at some Cornell books in the campus store when you’re here–they show some of the same scenes you’ll see but in other seasons so that you’d get a picture. The gorges and waterfalls, though, have their own beauty any time of the year, really. Just think–if yours and my S’s GTs all go as planned, you’ll both be starting on Cornell’s campus next fall!

Figgy–I really appreciate your perspectives of the academic environment at Cornell vs. your freshman college–and especially how you are glad to be where you are now–thanks! I’m going to tell my S about that. He was disappointed when so many of his classmates had not read the freshman summer reading assignment at his current school. He had not only read it, but he had discussed it with me; (I had read it also), and we even watched the film of it together and discussed that! Then he gets to campus only to find out that so many of his classmates did not even read it. He just needs a more challenging environment where other students are excited about learning, you know? It feels so much like this year away from Cornell is wasted in a way, but I know it’s not totally. [Sigh].

Haha, Dr_Mom, that’s okay! That description does sound dreadfully depressing, though (compared to Southern California, where I’m at right now) so since I’ll be in NY for both winter break and spring break, I’m thinking about visiting in December instead. And how many days do you think is good to stay in Ithaca? I’d like to pay Ian a visit (I hope Cornell people are still going to be there during the winter break… but I remember reading somewhere online that tours take place year round).

diehldun–We could have good snow then, or not. Just depends. If you are coming early in December, students will be working on finishing up their coursework and studying for finals. Middle to end might be kind of dead. I think there is a mini-semester session kind of thing in January, so there might be more people around then. Maybe if you want to be sure to meet with your GT advisor, you should set up an appt. ahead of time? I’d hate to see you come clear across the country only to find him on break! Staff normally do come back earlier than faculty and students in January.

How many days? Hmm. I suppose that depends on what you’d like to do. It’s not that big a town–I mean not like NYC. Maybe a long weekend? A day for the campus; a day for the town &/or siteseeing in the surrounding area, and another day for appts. and follow-up to whatever else you might like to see or do?

just for the people who are actually looking for who gets GT’d easily

peole with parents working at cornell with like straight B’s and a few C’s usualy will get a GT because they dotn want to upset employees

my grades are somewhat better but i think i might be in this boat :(

What? That’s complete ********. I know a good 100 gts and none are like that…stupid assumption.

Why would u even say that? Gomestar and Figgy should give u a giant nugie!!

Here’s the Ithaca High School Class of 2006 profile. There are 18 GTs.
<a href=“Home | Ithaca City School District”>Home | Ithaca City School District;

I’m surprised (or maybe I shouldn’t be?) at how many got into Cornell, guaranteed transfer or not. ILR not so popular there…

Anyways, I’m getting really concerned about one class I’m enrolled in. It’s generally considered the “easiest B.S. course” for freshmen, but graded/curved one of the harshest in the school. When I signed up for it, I thought it’d be an easy ‘A’ to help my GT cause, but after my recent midterm, I’m not so sure.

I remember a few CC members here last year were talking about Cornell’s no-exception ILR GT policy to the “3.3+/B” requirements. I don’t think the 3.3 is going to be an issue, but I’m concerned about the “nothing lower than a ‘B’”. If I do end up with, say, one B- in one course when everything else is an A, will having been an ex-GT somehow sway the decision in my favor? I’ve made it clear that Cornell is my ultimate goal, am in constant communication (in fact I will visit the campus again in wintertime) and I really don’t want to have gone this far and voiding the opportunity because of one ridiculous curving system possibly resulting in a B- when every other coures is an A.

Of course, it’s too early to tell what grade I’m going to get in the class (I just took the midterm a few days ago, but I don’t feel very optimistic about it), so I’m trying to stay positive. But OMG I’m trying so hard in this class (so are all of my friends here), the class is so frustrating; it’s becoming nerve-wracking because of the GT requirement…

I remember hearing a couple kids getting their gt thru w/ one B-. U need to push hard and show a lot of commitment but if u get one B- u mighttt still be able to use the gt. Otherwise if u get into the reg transfer process u might have an advantage b/c not only r u a GT but if ur in constant communication w/ ian he might push for u. Try ur heart out tho so that there isn’t even a question. Best of luck!

Do GTs normally apply as transfers to other schools just in case something goes wrong with Cornell (getting a B- second semester, etc.)? I don’t think my grades will drop or anything, but I find myself getting nervous about the fact that I’m banking on going to Cornell next year even though it’s “guaranteed.”

So, I guess, am I supposed to have a “safety” transfer school?

Not that I’ve heard of…but to each their own. Most people would have just stayed at their old school but I guess u could have a backup in that case. I’m sure u’ll be fine tho.

just putting this out there there is a really easy college tc3 that is probably the only commmunity college cornell recognizes, a lot of kids i know go there for a year for the easy grades then transfer on gt

cornell does this for the good community relations

“Probably the only community college Cornell recognizes”? Are you serious? I’m going to a community college this year, am a GT, and Cornell is absolutely fine with it. And my school is in Virginia, so I’m not sure how that would help community relations…

Hi all, I haven’t posted in quite some time. I hope all you guaranteed transfers are doing well. My d had a GT for the Fall 2008. I see that Cornell has a First Year Family Weekend for new students. How do the transfers fit into this program if at all? Also, we’re coming up for Transfer Day on Nov. 2- any suggestions for what we should do other than what they have on the agenda? Would you recommend visiting a dorm and if so which one is for transfers? Figgy, what say you?
