"Guaranteed Transfer Option"

The GT deadline is approaching!!!
I noticed that some of you did not receive a application status link because of various reasons, so I thought I should post the new announcement Cornell has in its website.

*"Cornell is currently receiving a very large volume of transfer application materials. We are devoting our efforts toward getting transfer applications processed and sent to selection committees for review. Please note that upon receipt of your application and supporting documents, it can take 2-3 weeks to process your application materials.

At this time, we are unable to respond to phone calls or email inquiries about application materials. We ask that you not send duplicate copies of your application materials. We will notify you in early April if we are missing materials from your application and will provide you with an opportunity to submit those materials.

Please visit this web site again after April 7th for an update. Thank you for your patience and understanding."*

WTC - thanks for posting that info. Has anyone been given application status link yet? It is hard for me to be waiting here w/o hearing back from Cornell at all. Not even an email for application confirmation…Also, does anybody know if GT decisions (ILR) will be given to us even if we did not receive application status link or any emails from Cornell at all?? Or, should I contact someone, esp. Ian?? Thanks.

WTC–Thanks for posting that. Is that note on your status page, or on a webpage that everyone should be able to see? My S hasn’t received anything about a link to a status page, and he sent in his application materials awhile ago now. He’s not ILR, though.

Did everyone survive the midterm process? How are you all doing?

grantortue–I hope you will let us know your RD results–and good luck! If you end up with a GT, I still think that’s a very good outcome and would highly support a decision to follow through with it if you’re sold on Cornell! As you can tell from reading this board, it’s stressful, but it’s also possible!

Hello everyone!

Haven’t heard back from Cornell… and I sent in all application material a while ago (including midterms form); should probably be expecting some sort of an e-mail within the next few weeks.

Dr_Mom, glad to hear the midterm went well for your son!

Dr. Mom - The note is on the app status page which requires log on. I did survive the mid term process. I only need a 3.2 and no grade below C. My cumulative is much higher than that so I am not worried. If nothing goes wrong, I am guaranteed to Cornell after the long wait.

Delivery_man and diehldun- I think Cornell sent me an app status link only because I applied to arts and sciences. Maybe different colleges have different policies.

Still, I cannot decide if I want to stay at UVA or transfer to Cornell. I think I won’t decide until I receive the financial aid letter.

Thanks Dr_Mom! I will def. let you know!

diehldun–Glad to hear you’ve got in all your paperwork and are now just waiting to hear back. It could be as late as late April or early May, I think. ILR might be different, though; maybe earlier. Good luck, and be sure to let us know when you hear!

WTC–I forgot you were still deciding whether or not to leave UVA; it’s a great school. Financial aid is certainly an important factor in this decision. Let us know what you do! Thanks for answering my question about the status page–I think you’re right that different colleges probably do things differently and maybe everyone doesn’t get that link.

grantortue–You may hear back about your RD before any of the GTs here get their transfer decisions back. Thanks for letting us know how it goes for you!

My S has in all of his paperwork now, too, so we’ve also gone into the waiting game. Sounds like these next few weeks will also be an awkward time with housing and pre-registration deadlines for fall at your current colleges coming up. GTs certainly have to be able to walk between 2 worlds!

Good luck, everyone!

hey guys i handed in all mystuff too
but my chances are prob over since i got those two B-s and that F

does anyone know when (if we get in) we get our housing/dining forms?

Hi everyone, I am new here. I am also a GT student, however, on my letter it says “Transfer Option”. Yet on my online decision, it says GT. Are GT and TO the same thing?

opeful, why did you pretend to be your mom in your other post?

Anyways, I think we (GTs) get them end-of-April/early May; first we have to get our decision, obviously.

diehldun–
me and my mom use the same account
she introduced me to this site

k i wish everyone luck on their GTs!
did anyone apply to other schools besides cornell?

Right on, Dr. Mom.

My finals are this week and I will be sending in the transcript when all the grades are filed, as per Ian’s instructions. While it does look like I’ll be pulling off good grades, I’m still way nervous about that B- last quarter. I guess all I can do at this point is focus on those finals and wait!

As for the walking between two worlds thing, I totally agree. Every week somebody asks me if I’m going to stay here next year or not. On top of GT forms, I had to fill out second-year housing applications, financial aid forms, major declaration, etc. It certainly is awkward.

I have not yet received any response from ILR regarding an application status link. Hopefully in a few weeks?

haha…yeah it is awkward. I had to create a schedule and shell out $100 for my sophomore room selection and pretend in general that nothing was going on, which was hard since I was on the swim team and also had to have my end of season meeting the coach to plan my goals for the following season.

Good luck to all you GT/regular transfer people!!!

2 questions:

Does Cornell always send an email anyways whether you got accepted or not on march 31st?

Let’s say you want to change your major greatly from what you originally applied for. Can you change the major you get GTed into, or do you have to transfer into the major you applied for and then change it once you’re at Cornell?

california love,

I don’t think that we’ll be hearing back by March 31. We could end up being surprised, but I was under the impression that we’d hear back some time between mid April and early May.

As long as the major that you want to switch to is within the same college that you applied to, I’d just call the college and let them know what your situation is. They’ll help you figure out the best solution. :)

Muffinzz–Welcome to the GT board. Are you talking about a letter you received from Cornell a year ago, or just now (will you be class of 2011 or 2012?) Maybe you could write the sentence from your letter in here that says “Transfer Option.” I’m remembering my S’s letter said GT specifically and came with a packet of information about the GT, in particular.

opeful–I can’t remember when they said the housing/dining stuff would come. Since decisions should be out by early May, I’m guessing maybe something like early June???

chrisfk & dewdrop87–I think it is smart to protect yourself in your current program by moving forward with all their fall pre-scheduling, housing, etc. until you get that acceptance letter from Cornell and your final grades for this semester–have the whole thing locked up, in other words. We did check on the housing deposit at my S’s current college, and they told us we’d get it back. We didn’t mention transferring yet, just “if he didn’t want on-campus housing after all next year, would we get the deposit back…” That kind of thing. It’s very strange for our S, especially since his course track is out of whack at his current school by needing to take Cornell’s required courses. Some of the courses he’s taken this year would not be required for the same major where he is now, so he’s off their cycle. It should make for an interesting advising session when he goes back from spring break! He did tell his advisor, though, of his GT, so hopefully, things won’t get too strange. The best thing would be if the advisor could sign him up for the classes he’d need to get back on track for their school if the GT falls through. I’m not sure what his roommates are going to do about keeping him (or not) in their housing group. They know his plans, but they also know that he won’t know for sure if he’s withdrawing for awhile yet. 2 worlds! 2 worlds!

Won’t it be nice to finally be at one college with one diploma as your goal? A couple of more months of this stuff, GTs! Seems like you’ll all know what you’re doing by mid- to late May at the very latest (when your final grades come in). Hang in there!

california_love–I’m not sure about changing majors within the GT program. One of the drawbacks I can see to that would be that the preparatory coursework (the college courses Cornell requires you to take at your current college to transfer) is selected according to your intended major, (at least that’s the way it works for the GT program in certain colleges within Cornell). So, you may or may not have the required preparatory coursework from your previous college to move in to the new major you’d like to transfer into at Cornell. Do you see what I mean? Also, like indigo says, it might also depend on if your change of major requires a change of college at Cornell. Best to ask your admissions counselor.

Cali: Depending on what major you’d like to switch to, the courses you’ve taken so far and the college your new major is in…it could be difficult to switch majors. I have a friend who entered as a Bio major in CAS and at the end of his junior year switched to human biology in HumEC…it will difficult but he will be graduating on time. When I came to Cornell I switched to a new major and had many courses to take…but I did it (granted I had a few 21 credit semesters).

Speak with admissions folks now and get their advice. If switching is feasible, make sure you get on that right when you come to Cornell. Good luck!
