A recruiting firm has put together a pretty good general overview of the top 50 law schools. The firm’s website is http://www.bcgsearch.com/. Click on BCG’s Guide to Top 50 American Law Schools. It’s an Adobe file.

Uh, that’s not a recruiting firm. BCG is actually one of the premier management consulting firms in the country. A lot of consulting firms are now hiring at law schools - in fact, the largest employer at YLS, HLS, and SLS for the last few years has not been a law firm, but rather has been McKinsey, the management consulting firm and arch-rival to BCG.

The truth is, many people who go to the very top law schools don’t really want to be lawyers (at least, not for very long), and consulting (and to some extent banking) is an attractive alternative. I was just reading Robert Rubin’s autobiography, and he stated candidly that he went to Yale Law without really knowing why he was doing it, and certainly not because he really wanted to be a lawyer, but just because he felt that it would be useful to whatever he was going to do later in his life. Turned out, he only worked as a lawyer for a couple of years and then became a Goldman Sachs financier (and then ultimately became Secretary of the Treasury under Clinton).

He is actually doing a speech on Thursday at Georgetown:

This isn’t the Boston Consulting Group: “BCG Attorney Search is the largest search firm in the United States dedicated exclusively to placing associates and partners in law firms.”

Greybeard, you are right.

So it appears. But you know what they say - even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
