Guilford College

Can anyone tell me more about this school? Also, I read on PrincetonReview that they have a scholarship that provides full tuition, r & b, books, and two trips home to 5 students every year, but I don’t see anything about this scholarship on the school website. Does anyone know more about this scholarship, perhaps the typical stats for someone who’s awarded this scholarship?

All I know about the school is that it’s supposed to be really hippie-ish (similar to perhaps Hampshire or Wesleyan).

Don’t know anything about the scholarship.

My AP English Language teacher went there for a year, then transfered because it was too liberal for him. He is a Catholic conservation, but he had a very nice scholarship to play football there. He told us how they had a ceremony for many days because of an old tree falling and dying. Stupid hippies. ;-)

very hippie-ish, but very smart, eclectic kids, totally not mainstream, wasn’t my top choice. supper tree hugger type

What are your stats? This college is not selective at all and is fairly easy get admitted. Greensboro is a moderate size city, but there isn’t much to do there.

Right, I saw that page, but it doesn’t list specific stats. Mine are 3.65/30 ACT

Well, I got in, but as an international student, with a half tuition scholarship, but I don’t see a higher scholarship there. I’m sorry.
About admission, I guess it won’t be too hard, but I don’t know anything else in detail.
I applied cause such hyppie (maybe social active others called) seems nice, and the accessibility of professors is nice.

They have a special forum for admitted students to meet each other and do bloggings or chatting, if you like I might invite you there to chat.

I’m also looking for more information about this college.

I live near Guilford College and am planning a visit to the school in the next couple of weeks. Any information I gather, I will certainly post for you guys. It will be very easy for me to get into; despite this, the environment there sounds really nice and suited towards my tastes.

Also, any of you guys who said they wanted information, just PM me so that when I do visit, I can give my report.

i don’t know abt the full scholarship but have know someone who got full ride a year ago…
and another on the alumni news: some alumni donated 2million recently and awarded 1 class of 2012 this year…

Interested parties should read up on the Quaker tradition. Guilford College is a Quaker school. In addition to being pacifists, Quakers are typically liberal. Except for Richard Nixon, of course. He attended another Quaker school; Whittier College in California.

My family toured Gilford last week. Like so many colleges in the past few years Gilford is changing. They seem to be trying to get back to their Quaker roots and are heavily promoting social responsibility, honor codes, and learning from students and professors by using “open questions” instead of lecturing. Worth investigating and the only school that we visited that spent a lot of time on trying to see if the school would be a good match for the student and not just “selling the school”. Social Activism is not just a hippy thing. IMHO. Expect nice lawns and well maintained but simple accommodations and buildings.

They have a significant nontraditional student population.

It enjoys a wide respect in academia. It is liberal, but how many colleges fit that label? Thousands. Its a gorgeous (and large) campus. It is also home to the Eastern Music Festival, perhaps one of the most prestigious summer music conservatories in the Eastern United States and draws world renown musicians every summer for absolutely phenomenal concerts, as well as a teaching conservatory to budding musicians. Its going on presently I believe.

Whether someone is liberal or conservative, social responsibility is a good thing. For conservatives, it means less for the government to have to do. For liberals it satisfies that inner flame of community and caring. For both, it gets things done that eliminate suffering and future problems.

Jesuit schools also emphasize social responsibility. Its the antithesis of the “me” generation and rampant narcissistic materialism. And I am a conservative.
