guitar lessons in Ithaca

i just started playing guitar and taking lessons this year, and I’d like to continue lessons when I’m at Cornell. does anybody know a good place in or near Ithaca to get good beginner/intermediate lessons?

Phil Shapiro (who runs WVBR’s “Bound for Glory”) at least used to give group lessons at The Straight, and can otherwise recommend someone. You can also ask at Ithaca Guitar Works.

If you want “the next level”, the Ithaca area is actually a hotbed for old time music, there are a lot of pro players in the area. Though many of them might be more towards Trumansburg. But it can’t hurt to track down someone like Jeb Puryear and ask about someone who gives lessons.

I have lived in Ithaca for four years now (and am going to Cornell next year) and there are tons of people for guitar lessons. For one thing, Ithaca college is always nearby and they have a fantastic music program. I take piano lessons from IC and I am absolutely positive there are guitar instructors there as well. If you aren’t too serious about guitar then I would advise against it since teachers there would probably expect you to practice and be devoted to learning the guitar. There is always Hickey’s as well although I am not entirely sure if they provide guitar lessons. Lastly, you could always try Cornell I am sure there are some instructors/groups where you could continue guitar.

I am a guitar teacher in the Ithaca Area. I have a degree from The Eastman School of Music, and years of experience teaching all styles of guitar playing. I travel to all my lessons, which really helps college students with busy schedules and limited transportation options. If you are interested in lessons, or if you have any questions, you can email me at

I can also email you my resume, student references, and audio or video of me performing. Hope to hear from you, and best of luck at Cornell.
