That’s very scary, my alma mater and I never would have ever envisioned something happening there. We live in a very different world today. Thank goodness for the insight of the shop owner, he is a real hero!
njfabfour the gun shop owner is not a hero. He is part of the problem. How many people have been killed or murdered with Mr Downs guns. Sorry but this is a subject I feel very passionate about.
You’re missing a very important word in your title: MAY. He MAY have stopped a shooting. There isn’t really anything in that story that indicates that he was actually going to shoot up anywhere.
You are right about the “MAY.” I wonder… What could he be charged with?
Shouldn’t we just be happy he didn’t sell a gun to a guy with mental health problems (who probably has a high risk of doing something bad)?
Pleased to see the shop owner exercised his right to refuse service. My mom always says…“if is waddles like a duck, quacks like a duck, it is probably a duck!”. I am sure those students/faculty/employees at OU are glad he refused service too, even if it was an imagined possibility. One happy OU grad here.

We don’t know. Personally, I prefer the gun shop owner who shows good judgment in a case like this to salesmen at gun shows who’ll sell guns to anyone with a pulse, but that could just be me.
It’s worth noting that some universities allow guns on campus, a mildly terrifying prospect.

It looks like he was in an altercation with a University staff member. He had been a student and recently had dropped out of school. He had been admitted to a mental health facility and was illegally purchasing the gun. Unfortunately the backround check must not have caught that bit of information. Only the awareness of the shop owner prevented him from purchasing the weapon there. His coming back to the shop is what prompted him to call 911. By the way the shop is in Logan about 45 minutes away from Athens.

Hmm. You wouldn’t need this “hero” gun shop owner if the US wasn’t awash with guns. Reverse logic.
He also formerly played hockey for O.U. once I read that, my first thought was multiple concussion-induced brain disease…
