Pick 3 Schools and give me abbreviated information, just the most important/spectacular aspects, I will give thoughtful/personal chances to each

humppppppp

CA community college student
Fall 2010 transfer, will have junior standing

3.55 college GPA, all classes transferable to UCs
Econ/Math major
3.3 UW/3.48 W high school GPA
2280 SAT (790 M, 750 R, 740 W)
790 US History, 740 Math II

ECs: 4 years of church group, including chaplain training, leadership, and organizing a 55-person conference w/ people from 3 states; 4 months of paid tutoring, 6 months of volunteer tutoring; bookkeeping for my dad’s biotech company, 1 year of cross-country, 1 semester of INTERACT club, 1 semester of sustainability club, hopefully an internship with a small political consulting firm next semester

Essays: Decent, I’m not that great a writer but I have a good writing center at my school to check them.

Teacher Recs: I’d be able to get good ones.

UCLA, Rochester, Case Western

scores are solid, gpa is passable if youve been taking hard classes, I would withhold the fact that it was your dads biotech company, as far as the essay goes, i would write a few draft outlines of a few topics that mean the most to you- and then build on each one with help at that writing center and see which is most appealing to you, try and get some research opportunities/academic related E.C.s over the summer- im sure your professors would be more than willing to help, keep going with those community service clubs- 1 semester looks a bit half-a**** + some sincere looking dedication would do you well

with all of that, id give you 50-60% at UCLA and Rochester, and 70-80% at Case

I am also trying to intern with a UC Santa Barbara economics professor as well. Collecting data and researching on change of income over time for individuals and economic data from many countries around the globe.

well you have basically done just about everything that one can do.
i think you can actually pull off MIT/Caltech- but just as insurance i would recommend giving the SAT just one last try to get over 2300. Regular Upenn should be an in, but one of the HYP i think would be a 10-15% chance. UC’s should also be a piece of cake. you’ll clearly end up owning the universe no matter what school you end up at

I plan on improving my test scores.

Schools applying to: University of Florida, Cornell( Early Decision), Columbia, Emory University, Suny Stony Brook, NYU, University of Miami, Florida State University, UCLA.

Thanks Mr. Guru. :)

improving test scores is lifelong endeavor that takes years of practice, so dont expect your scores to get above 2000 before you turn 24. for the time being, take the SAT and ACT at every available date, and take a practice test every week for expedient prep - the most important thing to do is after grading yourself, go back and review every single thing you got wrong, why and how and what you can do to improve. that said, your rather interesting ethnicity is unique and advantageous, and with a heartwarming accompanying story that could get you as high as NYU. I would strongly advise against Cornell ED, because honestly I don’t think its realistic, and you should use your power to ED elsewhere. On a rank of possibility, things would go: SUNY, UFl, Fl.SU, Emory, Umiami, NYU, and then unrealistic after that.good luck

Ely, thanks for chancing back!

But, question. Ok, so I have the 34 on my ACT right now as a rising junior. Do you think I should just focus on the SAT and SAT II’s, meaning not retake it with some prep to get that 35,36 or not send it at all? Or should I send it as it is along with the SAT?
Now that I got this score I don’t know what to do with it lol.

Thanks. Well I’ve finally been able to buy some SAT study materials so I’m confident I’ll be able to bring my scores up substantially on the SAT. I think I can turn that 1600 into a 1900 at the least.

My older brother was accepted into Cornell in 2004, but passed it for University of Chicago. His GPA was at a 3.4, but his SAT scores were alot higher than mine. But despite scores I plan on applying early decision regardless because it’s the school I really would love to go to. I wouldn’t say anything is impossible. My GPA isn’t horrible ranking in the top 4%, my test scores are just below and that’s partially due to me not studying for any of them before now. Hehe. I can’t wait for the October SAT. :P

Anyway, thanks again for your opinion Mr. Guru. Where are you considering applying for colleges?

35-36/2100+ >35-36 > 34/2100+ > 34 > 34/2100-

see my thread dracos http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/744820-chance-thread-not-novella-will-reciprocate.html

lolz @ inequalities. point made. you really think just a 2100+ would do it though? I was thinking at least 2200…

low expectations mean pleasant surprises, im sure you could get 2300+ if you really pushed, but you dont need to kill yourself over it

Hey! Nice talking to you again.

Top 3% of Class
I am currently working in a United Nations Lab (International Center of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering) in India (for a month)

I am looking into Penn, Columbia, Dartmouth, NYU, Berkeley, Northwestern, Wash U, U Chicago
DO I have a chance of getting into my dream school _-- JOhns Hopkins???

THANks

soadquake:

Throw all of your weight behind really interesting and unique essays, and perhaps try and get a supplemental rec from who ever you’re working under this summer.

MIT- 45%
Stanford- 60% (in state) 50% OOS
UC Berkeley- 80% (in state) 70% (OOS)
Cornell- 75%
CMU- 85%

Junie- 9.3% (admit rate for women) + an addition 10% because thats the proportion of African Americans at stanford + 5% for the cool e.c.s./living abroad/speaking other languages puts you at about a 25% chance in my mind. don’t be afraid to flaunt the race card in your essay, theres no shame in taking advantage of everything you have- given that other applicants would do the same thing if they had such an interesting background

10tala
Hopkins is a toughie. Out valedectorian who got into princeton was WL there last year. But given your relatively strong medical background, I think you might be able to pull it off. Get a 750+ on Math 2, and try and focus your ECs a bit. You dont need to list everything you’ve volunteered for ever, just the longest and most significant things. Otherwise adcoms will be a bit overwhelmed and think its inflated. For the 7 ECs you put on your app, I would put debate, newspaper, interact, model UN, internship, and ONE volunteer position that is most important to you. The rest can be organized and truncated a bit and put in the additional info area. IF you get your ACT up to a 34, I would give you 30% chance at JHU.
