music makes a nice essay, or if you have something more important to write about, make it the 150 worder on the common app and succinctly describe how much it means to you in 2-3 sentences

id like to take this opportunity to elaborate on one of my e.c.s: obsessing over harry potter and rereading the books 30 times in anticipation for the premier on tuesday night. if you can think of an hp trivia question that can stump me i will call admissions offices telling them to accept you

But even with the music supplement and everything it’ll only be like 40% chance? Damn I was hoping for at least like…well 50%. How about if I write some reeeaaaally good essays lol?
And I already wrote the 150 worder about my volunteering at the hospital, how it made me connect with people, how I’ll never forget any of the people I talked with (which is true), finding a way to help people, etc. >> You think music would make a better topic?
My personal essay is all about how I lost was basically neurologically emotionless for a while and was all like whacked out and couldn’t believe anything was real but now it’s over and I appreciate life and try my hardest and etc. Either they’ll think I’m awesome or I’m ****ing nuts. >>

GPA (approx.): 3.8/4.25
SAT: 800 CR, 790 W, 700 M
SAT II: 800 US History, 800 Literature
ACT: 34
Class Rank: Somewhere in the top 10%, class size about 375.

APs:
Euro: 5
US History: 4
English Lit: 5
English Language: 5
Psychology: 4/5…haven’t gotten it back yet!

Extracurriculars (a little disjointed, due to moving…I think they’re the weakest bit.):
Model UN (9, 10)
German Club, President (9, 10, 11)
Environmental Club (9, 10, 11)
Young Democrats (11)
Rotary Exchange Student to Austria (12)

I have about a hundred volunteer hours, mostly tutoring younger kids in German and helping out with a local peer mentoring program. I don’t think they’re on my transcript, but I might write about it for an essay.

Other stuff:
Should be a NMSF, recs will be good, essays should be good. I’ve won several local (county and state) writing contests and a German language contest at our state university, but nothing national. My English teacher last year submitted some of my writing to a national contest last year, but I won’t know on that till October.

Colleges:
U. Chicago
Wesleyan
Reed
Carleton
Williams

Thanks so much for doing this!

ingette:
-off the bat i have to say the best schools on that list for you are vassar and nyu. they just seem to fit you perfectly in every way, and on the plus side i think you can get into both
- i might consider joining a club that is not affiliated with theatre/forensics, ie a community service club or academic club or something of that nature
- i would consider taking a math/sci subject test, because that side of your application doesnt really show much as of right now
-nyu, fordham, vassar, macalester, american, and emerson should all be ins
-northwestern is a low/mid reach, columbia is a high reach
-swarthmore is actually going to be a high reach i think, because you seem to be mostly focused on the humanities and it is an engineering school for the most part

mcscruff:
-try and join some more clubs in your new school, go for leadership positions if possible
-you might consider the sat II german
that said:
in at wesleyan and carleton
match/lowish reach at reed
reaching for williams and u chicago

i am basing this off of the assumption that you live in the US. am i right?

Yes, Kansas. But I will be in Austria next year starting in early August, so no more chances for clubs. Anyway, thanks!

well then try and get in as many interviews as possible before you leave and make all the arrangements with your school for recommendations and transcript/score release before you go

thanks so much!

what sort of score should i shoot for if i took math i (the only math/sci subject test i could do relatively well on?) which score would you consider too low to send?

for math 1, shoot for 720 which is ~90th percentile
if you’re better at math, go for math 2 and aim for a 750

But even with the music supplement and everything it’ll only be like 40% chance? Damn I was hoping for at least like…well 50%. How about if I write some reeeaaaally good essays lol?

i dont know how well an essay about a mental breakdown would play out, if you can make yourself seem victimized and now stronger as a result, it could work. otherwise you might do better with a tamer subject like music, or perhaps connecting the two by showing how music helps heal the mind
