ECs include working at a CPAs office doing accounting and forensic accounting. I have become a valuable asset to his business (Im making him alot of money) and he lends me out to high profile lawyers to do work. I have been doing this for about 6 months and will continue until i leave for college. My resume has law firms and CPAs and such as emplyers.
I will very likely start working directly for Marc Ostrofsky (Networking/word got around about my adeptness, and he wanted to hire someone to help him managing websites and the like. Look him up on Wikipedia if you dont know who he is. He’s partners with Ross Perot) Im meeting with him next week. If i start working for him he will likely write me a letter of recommendation for college!! Im so excited about that!
Also I have been playing guitar for 10 years and have played many concerts and taught at a few summer camps
Been on numerous mission trips (habitat for humanity and hurricane Ike relief) and have done tons of community service with the boy scouts
Going to Texas A&M and UT Austin summer programs this summer

Story:
I came to this boarding school in Pennsylvania as a recruit for hockey. Known for having the best hockey program in the state of Pennsylvania, people from all over the world (as close as Pennsylvania and as far as Russia, Czech Republic, Canada…etc) are recruited there regularly. In 2004, I was selected as one of the top six defensemen in the Mid-Atlantic Region (NY,NJ,PA,MD,DE) and was asked to play in many showcases. This continued until 2006 and I moved onto the new school. I had high hopes of being a pro, the first Japanese NHL hockey player. My focus was always on hockey, I had very little interest in academics. I was heavily recruited to many schools, and I knew at that time that I would go to college for hockey. Then during my sophomore year, disaster happened. I had a season ending injury, and I required surgery. My grades at the time weren’t absolutely atrcoious, however, my surgery required routine check ups back home in Connecticut, I missed tons of school due to the fact that I had to travel home every week and my grades dropped horribly. Not only that, recruiting stopped, I was depressed and was a horrendous mess. I then soon realized that I need to change my focus from athletics to academics. Ever since then, my academics and attitude towards school have improved dramatically.

Essay: I will write about how my injury caused me to open my eyes and to step up.

Question:
I think I’m pretty damn unique compared to some of the other asian applicants. Will that make me stand out over the other (I play piano, I play violin, I’m in the asian club) asians? Do you think that my essay and counselor letter/injury situation will allow some colleges to overlook my mediocre grades? Will my senior year courses (Econ/Stat) show my strong interest to business and give me an advantage?

secondary school: will be first graduating class of a newly established magnet program in MD

I dont’ know how this will affect things, but my sister and I were raised with a single parent for the past 9 years…i guess i can talk about the challenges i had to overcome in an essay?

Northwestern
Johns Hopkins
Duke
Carnegie Mellon
UMichigan
UMaryland

Thanks!

westhamunited:
-retake the sat’s just one more time for extra security i think

  • if you show some interest in math and engineering in your ec’s and subject tests you are a low reach at harvey mudd
  • high match low reach at cornell
  • " " " " at northwesten and uchicago
  • in at usc

thanks elytron, but quick question
which schools out of my list would you consider the backup ones?

muchos gracias!!!

genre:
-pick up french again and take an honors or ap level course senior year instead of one of your 4 math classes
-make time for some community oriented ECs, service work etc. that is not hockey related

  • work your butt off for the sat’s, maybe a bit of act prep on the side as backup
  • IF you break 2100, you should be able to get into CMU and USC. BU is a High Match, NYU low reach, University of Washington Reach, UC’s are higher reachers but not THAT high (not like harvard high- id give you anywhere between 20-40% chance depending on your SATs)

rajraj, im not really familiar enough with those schools to make that judgment, but i think you could get into nearly all of them ( on second thought davidson might actually be tricky)

phlpsun:

  • you seem fairly set as far as getting things done
  • MIT EA wont do any harm if you do apply, but i wouldn’t expect an admission letter
  • Princeton I’d give you ~10% chance, probably wont happen as well
-Duke, Northwestern, Cornell, JHU, and UPenn all fall into that mysterious low-mid reach range, you should definitely get into 2 of them
-CMU UMich and Umaryland should all be ins

thanks elytron
i thought the exact same as you did

i’m applying to MIT and princeton just for the heck of it, who knows what could happen

i’d be happy with going to any of the next 5 schools on my list hopefully i can get in a few like you said

Race: Native American

Schools:
Duke University
North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Georgetown
Penn State - University Park
Michigan - Ann Arbor
Amherst College
Johns Hopkins
UVA

Thanks

Thank you very much!
So I go to a really good boarding prep school, sends like 40 percent of students to ivys + stanford and such every year. Not many ap classes, very low grade inflation, no ranking.

So: gpa = 3.44, my jr gpa was a 3.6
Sats: 1470/2200 (740,730,730)
Sat ii: Math 1 - 690, US History - 710

Extras - generally solid. 3 sport varsity athlete, 2 club leader more internships and stuff.

What are my chances at:
Michigan, Georgetown(EA), Vanderbilt, UVA, Emory Hopkins, Colgate, Uchicago(EA), Pomona, Davidson, Rice, Wisconsin, and NYU stern.

weswood:
Duke University - reach
North Carolina - Chapel Hill -low reach
Georgetown- low/mid reach
Penn State - University Park- match
Michigan - Ann Arbor- high match/lowreach
Amherst College- reach
Johns Hopkins- reach
UVA- reach

but who knows, if you do manage to pimp out your ethnicity you could do very well for yourself. get that SAT big time and you would be a big fish

iamawesome:
get that gpa above 3.5 and we’re talking.
Rice - mid reach
Georgetown- reach
Vanderbilt- match
Hopkins- mid/low reach
Michigan- low reach
Uchicago- midreach
Claremont Mckenna- low reach
UVA- reach
Davidson- midreach
Wisconsin- match
Colgate- low reach/high match
NYU stern- low reach
Emory- high match

What if i do get the GPA over 3.5

youll be on par with most of the top applicants at those schools. 3.44 is low, but if you work hard you have a lot of opportunity to bring it up. ideally you would be above 3.7, but theres not a lot of time for that

Secondary school: will be first graduating class of a newly established science/mathematics magnet program in MD
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian
College class: 2014

Major: Engineering/pre-med

SAT: 2360 (800 cr, 780 m, 780 w)
SAT 2: Math 2 800, will be taking bio and physics in Oct (aiming for 750+)
Rank: school doesnt rank but top definitely top 5% or 10% maybe higher
GPA: 4.0 UW on 4.0 scale, 4.82 W
APs: 8 total depending on senior schedule
Rigor of course: pretty hard, I’ve been taking advantage of AP’s and the special magnet science courses such as analytical/physical chemistry, genetics, and optics

Awards:
National merit commended (maybe semifinalist)
Honor roll/All A’s award for 3 years
AP scholar
Perfect attendance award freshman and sophomore year (cheesy, I know)
George Washington University Engineering award for excellence in study in science and mathematics

EC’s (probably my weak point):
JV/varsity indoor and outdoor track
Interning at the National Institutes of Health – NEI (National Eye Institute) this summer
CIT (counselor in training) at various summer camps for arts and sports
Volunteer at public libraries
Part of MCR (Montgomery County Regional Government) Executive Board – Voter Registration Director
Asian American club – active member
Math team – active member
Investment Club/Ping-Pong Club
Work- tutor at Kumon Math and Reading Center 3 days a week for 3 hours per day
just 148 hrs of community service, trying to get more

Schools:
MIT (EA)
Cornell
Johns Hopkins
Duke
Washington University in St. Louis
UMD – College Park
Princeton or Harvard (reach)

thanks alot!

bw0jo:

  • you are right, your ec’s are dragging down an otherwise impeccable application, you seem to have a void where most MIT applicants have research and science/academic programs
-engineer and pre-med are very different career paths… which one?
    that said:
    MIT (EA)- midreach
    Cornell- high match
    Johns Hopkins- high match
    Duke- high match
Washington University in St. Louis- match
    UMD – College Park- safety
Princeton or Harvard (reach)- reaches, but your academics are way up there and may buy you a letter
