Of course we bought one for my D for her freshman year - a nice, pink one! Somehow, I have a hard time picturing my son using one - I’m not sure why.

Did your sons use their shower caddy or was there a better option or method they used for community bathrooms? (ziploc bag does NOT count )

Funny you should mention the ziploc bag. We sent our youngest son to college with a small plain blue bucket from the hardware store. He ended up using that to store the bathroom stuff in his room. Then, he put what he needed in a ziploc bag and brought the bag with him to the bathroom.

I have not bought this yet for my son, but how about something from one of the camping store websites? You might be able to find a solution under: toiletry kit, shaving kit, or shower caddy. I think that I am going to check dollar/discount stores first for this type of item.

I just want to make sure that my kid’s toothbrush does not sit in a plastic ziploc all year long. I want him to have something open so that air can circulate around the wet stuff. I am not sure as to what I am going to get. I also want something that can hang, in case there are hooks, so it does not sit in puddles of dirty water. I don’t have the perfect solution.

A small bucket is not a bad idea, unless it gets knocked over constantly and the toothbrush keeps hitting the dirty floor. Yuck.

I think that my son would probably use one of those pop up mesh type of things in a color like navy, or army green. He’d be happy to use a plain bucket too.

I really don’t think my son would carry that silver shower basket, abasket. I know that my DH would say something about it too.

I think a safe bet would be for me to walk into a camping store, and look for some type of netting/mesh toiletry bag.

My S did use his shower caddy–a black square basket. He also had a terry bathrobe with big pockets (had never used a robe before college). Now he’s in an apartment with his own bathroom, so he can return to his old habits (you don’t want to know).

northeastmom, We didn’t buy the mesh pop-up caddy because I didn’t like the idea of the bottom (mesh/fabric like) being directly in contact with a dirty surface. At least with a bucket, germs won’t seep up through the bottom :)

The bucket is also easy to clean whereas the mesh can get stained.

To each his own. Moms spend way more time on this decision than the guys. In end, most will stick what they need into a ziploc bag.

My D actually bought one this weekend at Target that is black canvas with gray trim. Very utilitarian looking but her theme is black and teal and that matched better than the purple polka dots ones!

However, I think he mostly uses it to store stuff in his room. I think he usually just carries his stuff to the shower, it’s not like he has that much. He ends up showering at the gym a lot anyway. He has a case for his toothbrush, too.

I bought my son a plastic bucket type thing but he never used it. I think he just carried the stuff in his hands. With him it was just toothbrush, toothpaste, and occasionally shampoo & soap. It’s funny to think that I also spent an inordinate amount of time worrying about this very thing. The things we moms fixate on!

I think this falls under the same category as Guys and Pillows.

nysmile, we think so much alike! I had thought of this, but just did not want to show you all about my germ phobia to the 11th degree! I am pretty sure that some of the pop ups have a vinyl floor to them. I need to just look. Worst thing that happens is that I go with the bucket, but one can be sure that it won’t be cleaned out ALL YEAR! I don’t care about stains on the mesh, because my son certainly won’t care.

Mousegray, you are so right - the things we overthink/worry about!

I may just “pack” his stuff in some kind of container - bucket, caddy or otherwise - and then let the chips fall where they may. If he wants to carry in his hand, his bucket or with his toes that will be his choice!!!

Wait to you see what sits on the bottom of that caddy/pail/container after it sits in the shower a few times. You might wonder if they were brave enough to use the toothbrush that was sitting in it…yuck.

The black mold could make your stomach turn.

Each boy is unique, of course. Nevertheless, as a generality, unless your boy is VERY unique he’s not going to be using a shower caddy or a bathrobe.
