Guys bedding (comforter)

I am looking to get bedding for my brother. I used a duvet cover and insert because I can take it off and wash it and it replaces the top sheet. Should I get this for him? I feel like he won’t wash it but those comforters guys get from target that they never wash (girls and guys im looking at both of you!) are so gross! What did you guys get or did you get your sons

Both my kids like a duvet/cover set-up. Much easier to make the bed over sheets, blankets, comforter.

If it’s something that should be washed, as a guy, he probably won’t. There’s nothing wrong with a comforter you get from Target/Walmart/Sears/etc. Darker colors and/or patterns are helpful at masking stains. In most rooms, the bed is another piece of furniture and he might lay on it with his shoes still on (if he was anything like me, lol).

Getting him a duvet/cover instead of a comforter does NOT mean he’ll wash it! Get whatever he prefers, it’ll most likely seldom be washed either way if that’s his personality.

My son would have been happy if we sent a sleeping bag for him to put straight on the mattress. However, we bought him three sets of bedding, identical, and taught him how to do laundry. This is the boy who went to college with three pairs of black cargo/EMT pants, 6 black t-shirts, 6 pairs of socks and underwear each, plus a tuxedo with all the trimmings.

He does do laundry, primarily because I have to pay a set fee in his board charges and he hates wasting money. I think he calculates how many times he has to do laundry in order for us to break even and he does that many loads, plus one.

^Makes that set fee worth the cost, ha!

Yes, I think he feels like he is pulling one over on the school! I’m just happy that he does laundry.

My D uses a duvet/comforter, but I can’t see my S liking a duvet. He’d find it too cumbersome to put the comforter back in the duvet. Initially, he had a comforter that only got washed when he brought it home to Mom. It was replaced by a navy plaid quilt that he loved and actually washed now and then. He preferred the quilt because it was lighter and less bulky than a comforter. He added a blanket if it got really cold.

No matter what you do with respect to setting up a guys dorm room, seems very likely that is the best the room will look by far going forward. When my daughter and I took some stuff down to my son after winter break, I told my wife she shouldn’t go up to see his room. Was pretty much a disaster. Nothing unhealthy (at least not seriously). Or even really gross. Just not neat or really clean. Not uncommon for guys.

My son has a duvet cover at home on his twin bed so I intended to buy him a duvet cover for his dorm room and even went ahead and bought the down comforter insert. But then I had trouble finding masculine looking twin XL duvet covers (plenty in twin, just not twin XL). So I gave up and bought him a Ralph Lauren Down Alternative plaid comforter in twin XL that I got on super discount at Macy’s.

I got my S a reversible solid color comforter from Target. It’s the same exact one he has at home. It’s soft and lightweight, and washes well. It also dries pretty quickly. I can’t get either of my kids to even use a flat sheet at home. I knew a duvet/duvet cover would be out of the question. My D might suffer through for the sake of fashion, but there’s no way my S would.

My S didn’t want any comforter or the like. His just uses a sheet and blanket.

Duvets are harder to wash than comforters. You have to take the down comforter out and then get it back in correctly. Easier to throw the target comforter in the wash with the sheets.

As a college-age male, I prefer the sheets and comforter. I used a duvet this summer, and it’s been a bit too hot for me.

And duvet covers can be kinda cumbersome. It’s easier for me to just wash my sheets every week and my comforter every two months or so. But that may be just because that’s the way I’ve done it most of my life.

Good luck! And why not ask him?

Son has a Nautical sheet and comforter set that we bought at Ross $23.00.

Solid navy one side and dark beige on the other. He turned the clean side to the outside.
We also had an extra sheet set that never came out of the package.

Turns out he had to wash his comforter/sheets since he kept spilling drinks on his bed.

I can’t get either of my kids to use a flat sheet either. Seems so bizarre to me but no sense in fighting it.

None of my kids like a flat sheet either so I stopped buying sheet sets.

There is no way S would have used a duvet cover. Navy sheet, navy comforter. Don’t think they got washed much if at all during the quarter. Sent a second sheet along, rarely used unless something spilled on the sheet and it didn’t dry quickly enough. D had a second sheet, never came out of the package. But, she found a wet sheet gross and washed it immediately. D2 heads off to college next month: she is bringing one new fitted sheet and D1’s unopened one.

Where is this utopian college that has washing machines that accommodate comforters?

Anyway, I use a duvet, and while I do at times wash it, there is no guarantee that other guys will wash theirs.

LOL. With Kohls sale today and some serious coupon stacking, I asked him if he thought he needed another set of sheets to have on hand ‘just in case’. You know. For when you’re washing your sheets and you just want to put on a clean set without having to worry about anything. He looked at me like I had 2 heads and simply said “Mom. I intend to wash my things like a responsible person, if that is what you’re worried about.”

Well he told me.

So no. No extra sheets are needed.

(We bought a set from BBB a while ago when they had some amazing clearance sale. Comforter/sheets/pillow cover(?)… They’re sort of a manly light brown.)

Any suggestions on where to get a cheap duvet + cover option? (Preferably in a bright kelly green?) I’ve been looking at the Target website and all the duvet+cover options are way more expensive than the comforters.
