I’m frustrated! I am looking for a basic tool kit for my son. I’ve found some expensive ones that seem to have things that he will never use and then I find these cute pink and light blue ones made for women that have just the right stuff in them. Why don’t they make them in black too? I can’t believe that all girls like those wimpy colors. Best alternate one I’ve seen so far is at target, it was $14.99 and is sold out, at least on-line. Might have to make a road trip to see if it’s gone from the store too. Anything else out there for guys for under $20?

We got our son something like this – I’m not sure how much he used it, but at least it was available.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Tool+Sets&pid=00930534000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Home+Owner+Tool+Sets&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

if you’re getting your son a tool kit, get him a pink one. it’ll build character
also break down stupid stereotypes like Guys can’t have pink stuff

Couldn’t you just buy the stuff you want/need from Home Depot and put it in a tool box of your choice? My S just took a regular tool box to school with him with whatever he thought he needed. He kept it in his dorm room closet.

Yes, I can do that but I noticed that the tool kits have spots for each tool so you can see right away if something is missing. Otherwise, he’ll never know something is missing. sjmom, I did see that one but it had stuff in it I didn’t think he would use and missing some more basic things. Will consider. Ahh, maybe I’ll just wrap a hammer and screwdriver around some duct tape and call it a kit.

Get him a socket wrench set

And that would be for? Lots of lugs in the dorm room?

Check your local Bed, Bath and Beyond. I found one there last August for my son and it was under $20 and very manly looking. And he told me that he actually used it!

eh, I just found that to be my most helpful and useful kit…of course right behind a screwdriver set…Home Depot has some decent screwdriver sets for about 30 bucks

Check you local Ikea - I was there the other day & they had a basic tool kit - for just $5.99.

ferstammendment,
Sorry, I don’t think I know what you do with a socket wrench. Thought that was a sort of car thing.

Basically its a device that tightens/loosens bolts…and its ALOT easier to do when you have a socket wrench instead of a regular wrench

Get him good tools that’ll last a lifetime - Sears Craftsman (I don’t work for Sears). I’d stay away from the cheap low-end tools carried at non-tool-specific online places and stores (I’d never think of buying tools at BB&B but admit I haven’t checked them out, and I’m a ‘tool’ guy). The tools don’t need little specific cubby spots. If this is just for a dorm room, he probably doesn’t need a lot of tools but the following would come in handy:
- hammer
- screwdrivers - slotted and phillips in normal plus small sizes (assortments are about $12)
- pliers - normal, long-nose
- masking and electrical tape (has many uses)
- tool bag - preferably a manly one

If he’s going to work on a car, he should have more tools.

I just got one the other day at Target (for a male in red and black) for $9.99 for a graduation party tomorrow. The exact same kit in black/pink (more of the feminine colors - LOL!) was $14.99.

2 years ago I bought a tool kit at Hope Depot for $20. He’s used it a lot.

Rubbermaid soft-sided: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000ALR2Y/sr=8-2/qid=1154759695/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-2069077-4295924?ie=UTF8

I generally like Craftsman but I can’t find anything at the Sears’ website that would be suitable for a student living in a dorm.

kathie, i saw a nice tool kit somewhere recently (well it looked nice, i don’t know much about tool kits) and for the life of me i can’t remember where it was at… if it happens to pop into my mind i’ll let you know, because I remember thinking “oh that would of been nice to have when i was in college”

:)

edit- it just hit me. It was at Ace Hardware.

<a href=“Ace Hardware | The Helpful Place - Ace Hardware”>Ace Hardware | The Helpful Place - Ace Hardware;

Fendergirl that is perfect! Now I just have to find an ace hardware nearby that has it. Where did you see it - over my way?

Kathiep- First let me state I love Target. We don’t have one in our town and it is the one place I am willing to drive 45 minutes to shop. But I would not buy a tool kit from them unless I could actually touch and try out each item.
We bought some flashlights from Target that were a great price. Target brand. It was a kit of several different types. Almost every flashlight in the kit was worthless.

so what would he need?
a lot depends on- does he have a small tool kit for working on his computer?
his bike?
does he need something for his car?
my husband likes these guys as well as home depot and sears
