Is there a gym that NU students can use that is on South campus? Or is the only gym up north?

im pretty sure bloomquist is the gym down south

Three gyms: Bloomquist is down south, SPAC further north, and Patten the northern most point on campus.

If you’re down south, places like EAC (Evanston Athletic Club) have discounts for students. EAC is SUPER nice–i’ve been working out there this summer and will definitely miss it in the fall when I’m back up north.

In terms of Gyms
SPAC is the only one with raquetball/squash court, indoor pool and “track”
blomquist and patten have basketball courts
patten is where fencing team practices/competes, i’m not sure if they have treadmills and such since spac is so close

how are the free weights in each? and are there rubber weights and all that jazz for powerlifting? also, are there weight belts? or should we bring our own?

If I want to use a treadmill or an ellyptical trainer and live up north, which gym will provide that equipment? Thanks.

Spac…

I looked at both SPAC and Patten’s websites with virtual tours. SPAC is a much lesiure health club. Patten is for the real lifters. Dang, I’m pretty sure you will like Patten Gym. I actually toured SPAC. It’s free weight area is very limited. Sad, b/c the view is amazing. Here’s some links.

thanks for the info man, appreciate it!

i expect some roids in return so we both get huge at Patten. That place is a bigger replica of my hs basement gym.

haha
do you lift already? or are you planning to get started @ NU?

LOL!!

Patten is for the hard-core lifters and is pretty much a “sausage-fest.”

SPAC has all the machines (not much in free weights, tho) and has much better scenery (I’m not just talking about the lakeview).

There is also another gym further up North at Ryan Field/Welsh-Ryan which is pretty nice (but reserved for scholarship athletes).

haha, Patten sounds like the place for me then. girls are too much of a distraction while lifting…and i hate machines

From someone who already attends NU…Is it possible to get a full upper body workout (chest, shoulders, back, arms) at Bloomquist? The virtual tour and description are a little vague.

I’m going to be living on south campus and would really like to keep up my workout routine without having to trek up to SPAC everyday.

I spent last year and will spend this year on south campus. Yes, you can get a full workout @ Bloomquist. There are roughly a dozen machines, each for a particular muscle group. You have the pull-up/chin dip weight assist, bicep curl, the crew-like machine thingy, lat pull down, and two chest machines, hip machines, and some leg stuff. Plus a bench press and enough free weights for those opposed to machines.
I’m unsure why all the meatheads run to Patten or SPAC, since Bloomquist is next to the sorority quad, I think it has the best “environment”. And seeing girls fighting for the elliptical machines in the weeks and days before sorority rush is the absolute height of amusement and hillarity.

Is Patten really where the Fencing Club practices? I’m in ISRC and was interested in the club, but I dunno if I’m interested enough to make the full North-South trek every time…

thanks for the reply CerebralAssassin…

I’m glad to hear there are free weights too. I didn’t know that

I don’t think there are too many meatheads who frequent SPAC.

arbiter, the n-s walk isn’t really that bad at all, especially during the fall and spring. it will take you, at most, 15 minutes if you’re a slow walker. if you really like fencing, go for it.

also, i’m not sure if bloomquist has incline and decline bench press. i’ve only been in there for intramural basketball games, as i usually hit up spac (i only lift to look good in bed, and i’ll be damned if i’m gonna pass up the opportunity to do it in front of cute girls)

p.s.–the virtue of bloomquist’s proximity to the sorority quads is tempered by the fact that a lot of sorority girls belong to private health clubs in downtown evanston that have pilates classes, trophy-wife “boot camp” and **** like that.
