H.S. Senior is Never Home

I hate to be a worry wart, but a daughter who is gone in the evenings with a BF would have my hair standing on end. Sorry, but one of the joys of being an adult is paying your way. No treating mom and dad like a flop house while you smooze and snuggle, kiddo.

I hope you’ll tell her that you are terrified that she’s about to make you a grandmother (which makes it your worry, not her behavior). Tell her you are overwhelmed with fear and worry and the only way you are going to have a moment’s peace is if she is home for dinner and then home again after whatever evening event (a reasonable curfew for a school night is 11 p.m). BF is welcome to come to dinner anytime. He can stay and study (in a public area, not her bedroom).

I expect the reaction would be tears, drama, you-don’t-trust-me, no-one-else’s-parents are-so-weird, etc. Doesn’t matter. You are worried and will have no peace of mind unless she is home for dinner. Period. Accept that you are flawed. You promise to work on this all year so you are ready for her to be gone next year. Meanwhile, dinner is at XXX p.m. and she needs to be there.

It is so much better to have some drama and misery now than find out that you are about to be a granny at Christmas. The only other option is to make sure she’s on birth control and wave Bye-bye. Some families do that, but I think a daughter is worth fighting for . . .
