My daughter got sick this week with what they assume to be H1N1. There are so many sick at school that they are not testing - just giving them tamiflu (which worked wonders!) and other medications for the flu and an information sheet on how to care for yourself and precautions to take to not spread the flu. Thankfully it looks like my daughter’s case was pretty mild (perhaps due to the tamiflu). So my question is should she get the vaccine when it’s available in case what she had was NOT the H1N1? She has asthma so I always worry about her getting sick on top of having asthma. Thanks!

It wouldn’t hurt to get the vaccine just in case, but nearly all the flu being reported right now is H1N1. So she may well have already had H1N1.

What typically happens in these new strain pandemics is that the new strain crowds out the garden-variety seasonal flu strain that year. And that seems to be happening this year.
