Haas Language Requirement

Wouldn’t fluent speaking, reading, and writing place you into a much higher level course than the second semester Spanish course?

@ucbalumnus Possibly, but I only need the second semester.

Note that http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/foreign_language.html indicates that there are ways to fulfill the foreign language requirement by testing if your knowledge is more advanced than the second semester college course.

Yeah, but if he takes it, probably guaranteed A.

On the other hand, lots of colleges, departments, or instructors do not like heritage speakers taking a lower level course than they should be taking. Also, the various required participation elements in the course may be uninteresting and useless for someone who should be in a more advanced course.

The one thing I will say, to possibly support going higher, is not boredom or their possible disdain, it’s if you are fluent that is a huge selling point.

Did you add it to your application? If not, I would suggest adding to TAU in comments and alerting Haas. Then take the exam to prove fluency. Bilingual is a big thing to mention in the application.

Im fluent in a practical/conversational sense, in the class im learning mostly formal type stuff so for me its boring because of how redundant it is but that doesnt mean im not learning new things. So its not as if i’m napping through the course; its helping me build a better foundation
