S19 said he’d been using a filter for Snap Chat that changes his hair color?? I don’t know, I barely understand Twitter.
Anyway, he said as soon as school is out he wants to dye his hair pink, purple, or blue. Issue is, he has very dark hair & doesn’t want to bleach it if possible. He said a semi-perm color would be ok but he’d prefer a permanent. Has anyone had success with any particular product? Should I look for a salon instead??
Try Sally’s Beauty Supply- that’s where my D’s used to go for blue dye. Maybe they can help with the latest.
There is a line of hair color (Lime Crime) that comes in the unicorn colors but is meant for darker hair.
I used to bleach and dye my D’s very dark brown hair- purple, blue, pink, etc. I’m curious to know how a light/bright hair color would show up if the dark hair isn’t lightened first.
The Korean beauty shops have the best hair color products (according to the wife). Try a place like Face Shop or Amore.
I’m not entirely sure you’ll find a permi that will actually turn it bright colors without bleaching or lightening. The most it would do is add some tints.
I dye/have dyed my hair red, purple, and blue and even with my light brown hair, it’s hard to see blue and purple.
FWIW, I ADORE Arctic Fox for hair dye. It’s probably the brightest that my hair has gotten but it is only a semi-permanent dye. It’s vegan and it conditions your hair rather than frying it like some hair dyes do. (Lime Crime is also a semi and the same basic thing as Arctic Fox. Both are great)
Thanks all! I’ve used Manic Panic on my younger S who has medium brown hair. It didn’t work at all, he was so disappointed!
It’s hard to dye dark hair. My DD paid my hairstylist to bleach and then dye her hair. And then I paid to have it done back to her natural color later, ha.
Ha! @MaineLonghorn !! I’m gauging how serious he is about it, especially since he has a couple months before he can do it.
Don’t know about the pink, but I’ve helped my son dye his hair both purple and blue so know how those worked. He has medium blond hair so no bleaching first. The blue was vivid and looked great, the purple didn’t even leave a tinge. So I’m guessing for purple, bleaching first would be needed.
If your son wants to go from dark hair to Pete Davidson or Ryan Lochte light he should go to a pro. Then he will need to pay for root retouches. If he wants a few wild colors like Tekashi 6ix9ine he can put in some colored extensions or buy cheap extensions and color them with Manic Panic. They will look like straw. The other choice is to go to a cosmetology school because they always need people to practice on.
And really, if he is a kid with short hair, you and you tube or reading the intertubes will give you plenty of instructions as to how to lighten and dye. This stuff is not rocket surgery and Sally’s is your friend. Just pay attention to root and scalp instructions. Most kids now are accepting the dark root look because even they don’t want that stuff too close.
Tell this guy I loved the 80’s! I like to see young people now going so retro, paying homage I guess to many of us, from 30 years or so ago. Old timers like me even remember the Missing Persons singing about going blue in their song “Words” from 1982. Funny to see young people do a look that ISN’T new, ISN’T bold, or ISN’T different but rather is copying something popular from years ago- something that many of us saw or did in our youth.
I also think college age is a good age to be young and silly, as long as something might not be permanent or dangerous.
Wish I had enough hair left to dye mine blue! Ha!
He won’t get meaningful color change without bleaching first. I’d go to a professional (which includes a beauty school) the first time doing a double process on dark hair. Too many ways to screw it up. Then the professional can tell him how to re-do it and touch up roots at home.
I’ve had every color under the sun. My worst hair experience ever was when I attempted to bleach it myself, because I’d had good luck doing a few minor things in the past. I looked like a calico cat and had to rush to the salon. That was a very expensive lesson to learn.
My D’s friend has black hair. She went to a salon where they did a nice “gradient” bleaching, then had purple put in the bleached part. It was super cool, because it faded from dark to light purple, then it looked a cool grey color. It lasted six months at least. Her hair was quite coarse. Not sure how long it would last on finer hair. Anyway, bleaching is the way to go if the goal is bright colors.
Another idea, which is less expensive and can be fun but messy, is to try a burgundy henna on dark hair. It will give a nice sheen of color. It fades, so no lines. Not sure if that is great for a guy though.
