Hair Disaster!!

In an effort to save money, I have been doing my own hair for a while - both coloring and cutting. I decided to splurge and get some highlights and a professional haircut as I am flying “home” for my father’s 80th birthday celebration. As I was still trying to be economical, I purchased a living social coupon for the highlights and haircut. Big mistake.

I can’t see a single highlight because I think that the hairdresser made the highlights the exact same color as my hair. My hair color is the same as when I walked in the salon door. Also, I wear bangs because I have an enormously high forehead. I now have the bangs of a six year old. Remember the pictures of kids with their Mary Jane shoes and straight bangs across their foreheads from the sixties, let’s just say that I would definitely fit in that picture. To top it all off, I asked for some long layers. I think my hair now has about half the volume that it did before. I did NOT have half the volume to give up. UGHHHH. I would have been better off spending the extra 75 dollars and going to my previous hairdresser.

Lesson learned.

On the plus side, I am really looking forward to seeing my whole family for the first time in several year!

Did you ask hair stylist or manager to fix the things you did not like? Notching the bangs would help - they’ll still be short but at least not blunt straight across. I sympathize - but hope you don’t let it get in the way of enjoying your trip.

Yes, your bangs need to be textured/notched…maybe made more whispy.

You need to go back and have them redo your highlights. She either didn’t leave the chemicals on long enough or forgot to mix in the peroxide. Did she comment that the highlights weren’t showing up? Did she even check the color before removing/washing out???

I would think that getting those highlights in will make your bangs look less 6th grade.

There are also products where you put a tiny amount into your hands (when hair is dry) and you run your fingers thru at the roots to give more volume. Another trick is to put some baby powder/corn starch on your hands (not a lot!) and run your fingers thru your roots for volume.

I would go back and speak to the salon owner. If they won’t do anything, I would suck it up and make an appointment at another salon. Then I would go on my FB page and tell everyone not to go to the first salon.

So sorry. Frankly, I wouldn’t let anyone at that salon touch my hair again. What do others think of it? Sometimes straight bangs can look very chic…think Anna Wintour or the actress in the movie Amelie… Thankfully, hair grows. Have fun w/ your family!!

Report your experience on yelp.

Agree that they dissatisfied you and you should let people know- both the manager and potential customers. Tell Living Social that they were unacceptable.

Yes. Report it on Yelp. I just had a bad experience when they did not honor the yelp deal.

It was a Living Social deal, not a Yelp deal. But yes, review on both.

What are the online reviews for this salon? does anyone there have any great reviews?

Wow. Sorry to hear that. I’m a bit leery of services offered as Groupon etc. deals. Good places are usually booked far in advance without the need to drop prices.

Just to mention, I got a great cut and color offer from a Living Social deal and she offered the same price combination for future visits without going to Yelp and I used her several times.

So what do people do when they go to a salon and can’t see the highlights? Well you talk about it. Even if you walked out you can go back and point out how they can’t be seen. Horrid bangs I don’t know.

I did get an awful experience once and had to go somewhere else for it to be fixed. The guy was batshit crazy so I just wanted out of there. It is actually a hilarious story in retrospect, one I have told hairdressers many times because of all the strange stuff he did. And he was the owner, there was no one else to go to.

Update on the hair dilemma.

First of all, thanks for all the input. Unfortunately, I avoid confrontation like the plague, but I took some of the advice given and called about the highlights or lack thereof. I went in after the stylist’s last appointment this afternoon and she redid the highlights. I now have warm caramel colored hair and I really like the color. I also had my bangs notched and slightly angled and then added some longer bangs on the side. I can’t do much about the lack of hair from the layering, but when I wear it in a messed up do, it looks much better!!

Now it is time to celebrate my wonderful father whom I love dearly!!

Good news! It sounds like she forgot to add the peroxide in with the coloring, or used the wrong number for lightening.

As for the lack of hair/volume, look into the products used on dry hair at the roots to help with volume. Seriously, I find that the baby powder on fingers running thru roots does an amazing job of adding volume…it’s an old trick that some models use. Just don’t use too much…don’t want the white to show.

Gads. H and I were fixing up some old scrapbooks the other day and there is a year that followed “the worst haircur of my entire life”. If could see my chopped hair when my mother cut it at age 5–well this was even worse.
Of course, there was a family reunion picture and a memorial after that pictures were taken…and on and on.
Hair does grow out but I have learned that if the cut/color is important to you …

Glad to hear you are happy enough!

Coupon or not, I’d ask that they fix what can be fixed!

momofmusician17 - I am so sorry, but I am glad to read that you got a little help. Enjoy your dad’s celebration and spending time with your family.

I, too, have cringed when I have seen photos of my own bad hair. Thankfully, I splurged for D’s recent wedding - professional cut, color, and day of wedding professional make-up and hair. If I do say so myself, I looked pretty good. :"> Those photos will be around a long time.

I got my husband some hair gel that adds body, and have been borrowing it because I love the way it makes my hair look. You may want to try a hair product that adds body/volume.

Have the stylist teach you how to back comb if it goes with your style. That can make your hair not look so severe.
Glad you got some help.
The stylist may not have done anything wrong re highlights, but if hair was resistant/ virgin, it would not lift as much as desired.
