Half of Segundo is closed

According to the contract info for housing, Bixby, Gilmore, Malcolm, and Ryerson Halls are closed for the 2010-2011 school year, leaving Alder, Thompson, Miller, and Regan open. Does Segundo still have an edge over Tercero now? What I’ve heard is that Miller is for integrated studies students only, and Regan is grimy and old for a dorm. That leaves Alder and Thompson.

theyre renovating them.
Alder and Thompson are really nice buildings only built a few years ago. Regan is quite old and rooms are small, but everyone i knwo who lives there says its really homey.

Tercero just opened up a sizable new building, so I predict that for freshmen, Tercero is where the main socializing will be.

In the past, though, Segundo has been the place to go.

What is the probability of getting a cuarto suite if those are your first choices since segundo will be closed and many people may want Cuarto second?

I think getting a suite in Cuarto is pretty easy. Most people will opt for Tercero since it’s going to be the liveliest dorm area next year. As if Tercero weren’t big enough already, they’re opening up 3 more dorms for the fall! I fear for how impacted the computer center will be during peak hours…

But yeah, if you choose Cuarto as your first choice, I’m pretty sure you’ll get it :).

What’s the chance that Tercero will become the next Segundo, then? When I visited I felt that Segundo was great for me since it is so close to the ARC and the humanities departments. And I party a lot so its proximity to Frat Row is a bonus. I didn’t even visit Tercero.

Although Tercero is getting the new buildings, I still think Segundo will be highly popular just based off what you said… also, did you know there’s a Trader Joe’s opening in the U-Mall (across the street from Segundo) in the fall!? :)

Even though Segundo is drastically being downsized next year, there’s still a good chance you will be able to get into the older building (Reagan Hall). Sure, it may be the oldest dorm on campus, BUT you get all the perks of being in Segundo… such as an emptier dining commons (and questionably the tastiest), and all the things you’ve mentioned.

If you wind up getting Tercero even if it wasn’t your first choice–all is not lost. The university offers services to get you to and from places in the evening. (Escort service will pick you up and drop you off anywhere on campus at night for free. Tipsy Taxi will pick you up and drop you off anywhere in Davis for a $2 fee-- they also have a no questions asked policy on what you did that night, hence the name Tipsy Taxi). Oh, and Tercero is only about a minute or two further from the ARC than Segundo is, so don’t let that be the deal-breaker!

marzxbarz, how far is Cuarto from Campus anyways? The main complaint I hear about Cuarto is the distance. Is it really true that it is very fara way from campus? If it’s about one to two blocks or across the street, it doesn’t seem so bad.

@Indian-
It’s very close. Right across the street from the on-campus apartments, in fact. It’s probably a 5 minute bike ride to the ARC, including waiting for the light.

@marzxbarz

Are we able to choose which part of Segundo to live in? If there’s a chance I get stuck in Regan, I’d rather just put Tercero first. Isn’t Miller in Segundo for ISHP students only?

^no, you cant

Cuarto isn’t far at all! In fact, for people who are lazy, Cuarto can even be more convenient because the bus line takes them to/from school, whereas Segundo and Tercero residents have to walk or bike :P. Of course, let’s hope nobody is -that- lazy… It’s really only about 8 minutes walking distance from Cuarto to Segundo, and less than five minutes by bike. Since Davis is such a flat-terrained city, biking should be pretty easy (if you aren’t biking against any possible wind).

You can’t choose which specific dorm you’d want to be in. Chances are that everyone will opt for Segundo North or the new Tercero buildings, which will bring the chances of getting into those dorms back to square one. Miller is for ISHP and I believe the engineering program. It’s a very studious dorm. My friend tried to study in that their study lounge once during finals, and when she took a break from studying and started whispering to her friend, she was scolded by a resident. The only other themed floor in Segundo North would be the African American themed floor. So if you really wanted to get into Segundo North, applying to one of these three floor themes (ISHP, Engineering, AA) will probably get you in :)

Well I can’t apply to ISHP, I’m a party animal, and I’m not black lol. Can I at least opt out of a theme after I get the dorm?

u r not mandated to do the theme at all. i dont think anybody did the freshman seminar thingy that is offered, it was just the fact that you were around other people with a similar interest. there were a few nonengineers who were simply put in the engineering dorm bc there was room.

did Engineering move from Tercero K marzxbarz?

Mmm, you don’t have to be black to apply for the AA themed floor. It’s just for those who may be interested in AA culture. There are a few events that may cater to the students on the floor, but I don’t know if it’s mandatory for them to go to.

As for Engineering students… good question! I’m not sure if they did move. I thought I heard they were in Miller this year, but don’t remember where I heard it from. Lol.

can anyone in the miller dorm talk about how it is? Is it that studious? o.o
