Halliburton moving HQ

I was wondering when La Marseillaise would be posted. :)

It’s true, Dubai is in no way comparable to Saudi Arabia, that’s another, altogether more unpalatable neck of the woods…

“Mimi - Do a little better job of googling, and you’ll learn that the black in the flag doesn’t represent oil…”

To quote World Atlas.com:

The flag feature the Pan-Arab colors of red, green, white and black, colors symbolic of Arab unity. In addition, other color references include green representing fertility; white representing neutrality, and black the incredible oil wealth within its borders.

(my name isn’t “Mimi”)

My guess is that the anthems of many countries are full of blood and nationalism…

I’m curious about the reaction in Dubai about this Halliburton news? Hillary’s strident tone (once again, like with Dubai Ports) is laughable, given how thoroughly in bed with Dubai Bill has been.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/12/AR2007031201299.html</a></p>

Reaction in Dubai: 2 columns on the front page of most newspapers, no major editorial, in fact no major upheaval. Just another day really. (At least from what I can tell)

Okay, Mini (far more fitting) - here’s another flag description:

The flag of the United Arab Emirates is believed to be based on the Arab Revolt Flag which was created in 1916, and flown by Arab nationalists during their liberation struggle against Ottoman (Turkish) rule. Red, white, black and green are called the pan-Arab colors and have been historically linked to the Arab people and Islamic faith for centuries. They stand for Arab unity and independence and can be seen in the flags of many countries in the region.

xxxooo from a master googler!

http://worldatlas.com/webimage/flags/countrys/mideast/uae.htm</a></p>

Here’s where you can get one:

http://www.united-states-flag.com/unarem.html</a></p>

(Halliburton will need a bigger one.)

The situation re: oil’s actually very different for Dubai as compared to the other emirates in the UAE (the UAE’s more of a federation of distinct emirates than a cohesive country). Dubai’s oil reserves are tiny compared to those of other emirates like Abu Dhabi (the capital), and they only account for about 6-7 % of its GDP.

By the way, the flag of Dubai’s quite different, File:Flag of Dubai.svg - Wikipedia;
can’t find much symbolism in that!

Isn’t that just the flag of the city? Anyway, how did all those Communists get there? (Maybe that’s why Halliburton is coming; the American corporate socialists tend to like communist China as well as a destination.) (Or maybe it stands for the blood in the national anthem? “Every one of us sacrifices with all of our blood/We sacrifice with our very souls, oh, my homeland.”)

:) It’s the flag of the emirate. The emirate and the major city within it typically have the same name in the UAE. There are a few other cities in Dubai emirate, but when people refer to Dubai, they mean the city most of the time.

Mini, your provincialism would make me sad, but luckily I have a sense of humor…

By the way, k_twin, the wikipedia pix doesn’t really indicate the white on the left of the Dubai flag - just comes across as all red. (Heaven forbid!)

Considering Dubai does little for its workers, has rampant human rights abuses:

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Lusa is a 17 year-old orphan kidnapped in 2004 from her native Uzbekistan. Lusa’s aunt engineered her abduction to Dubai using a cousin’s passport, because the aunt wanted to take Lusa’s apartment. In Dubai, Lusa was sold to a slavery and prostitution ring. When she was no longer useable in prostitution, the traffickers sent her to a psychiatric center. An Uzbek NGO located her in Dubai. The NGO arranged to move her to a shelter, and they began working on her repatriation. Because she entered the U.A.E. illegally, on a false passport, the U.A.E. immigration service said she should serve a two-year prison sentence. Government officials and the enterprising NGO are negotiating Lusa’s case.

NOW I GET IT!!! Halliburton and Dubia- a perfect match

Ah yes, that’s was what I was referring to earlier. As I said, it’s a very weird city (though weird’s probably not the right word), both exhilarating at times and yet terrible very often.

Good thing Haliburton didn’t move their HQ to Paris France; Mini and his short-tempered friends would have already ripped out their chest hair:

…civilization and socialism, indeed.

.

But aren’t we also the pot calling the kettle black? (Guantanoma Bay, etc?)

Dorothy -

“I require three things in a man. He must be handsome, ruthless and stupid.”

Let’s hope mini is also handsome and ruthless…

hilarious, really…

…now I’d either duck or throw on a raincoat; because, I suspect, it’s about to hit the fan.

“I don’t care what anybody says about me as long as it isn’t true.”
