Halotheraphy (Salt Therapy)

Mr. Arabrab’s careful well-respected internist recommended that he try Halotherapy sessions in a salt room to try and deal with a chronic cough of unspecified origin he’s had for two decades. (He has been extensively tested, x-rayed,…) Doc said that it seemed to be helpful for respiratory issues, and also for skin conditions.

Anyone with experience with halotherapy?

No experience here, but I hope extensive testing ruled out acid reflux.

I don’t know if this is the same thing but I would be willing to try it if there was a chance it would be helpful.

None of my 3 lung docs have ever recommended this. Chronic cough is most commonly allergies, reflux or cough variant asthma.

I finally got rid of a nonproductive chronic cough I had had for years via an Rx Aerobika airway clearance device and hypertonic saline nebulized. It was very inexpensive and we are shocked at the improvement. I now use it twice daily instead of Zyrtec and the cough has stayed away!

Yes, he was tested for reflux, asthma, lung cancer, COPD, …

@HImom - the nebulized hypertonic saline sounds like it might have a similar effect to the salt therapy.

@raclut - yes, that is what I’ve seen.

Just saw a tv segment featuring this Korean spa near Atlanta,

Hypertonic saline goes into your airways and for us was a covered prescription. The nebulizer can be purchased outright or rented as durable medical equipment. We have owned one for over a decade and it is handy.

Have not heard anything positive about the salt therapy from any of the many scientific conferences I’ve attended and think hypertonic saline has more research behind it.

I saw these in a Bed, Bath, & Beyond magazine and it seems it is used to purify the air. I would try it out.

A Salt Therapy place opened up here last year. It must do some good for someone or at least they think it does otherwise I don’t think it would still be in business.

Here’s an article with more info about the treatment, as well as pro and con.
