I got an email earlier saying that new tickets would go on sale just after the Tony’s end, at 11:15 PM EST. Unfortunately I saw the message about half and hour later so I didn’t even try…
I just finished buying tickets for Hamilton in NYC at face value. Received an email at 11:11 tonight (make a wish) that blocks of tickets were released. They have them available as early as this month (or did). I bought mine for September on 2 different dates. It’s worth trying if you want to see it.
“The reality is that there are very few productions which are entirely cast with people of color. I think that’s obvious, isn’t it?”
True, but if I may once again assert the supposition of an intent to protect and expand the opportunity for Blacks to showcase their talents, Gershwin understood that there was never a guarantee that Blacks would have prime roles.
For so long, there were productions entirely cast with NO people of color. This was not for wont of the desire and talent of people of color to be cast, but rather a reflection of sad and unfortunate times.
I could see the difficulty of the stipulation on Porgy and Bess being one where there is now an outcry of reverse discrimination because of the insistence that all the actors identify as Black to the absolute exclusion of anyone else. But not because the actors, famed and fabulous, do not have a presence within the acting and performing community (even where they may have no lasting presence in the minds of those who do not also identify as people of color).
“It’s one of the comments most often associated with Hamilton and has been front and centre in their marketing.”
Can you tell what it is you refer to which is front and center? (Not a fan, so not familiar with how they are pushing the show.)
“Wasn’t the discussion about high school productions?”
Actually, it had been opened back up, or so it seemed to me, by @prefect, with “For example, the Gershwin estate specifies that when Porgy and Bess is performed in North America the cast has to be black.”
As for high school productions casting across cultures and races(particularly where the demographics do not support such tight casting), I’d already clicked in and ‘liked’ a couple of comments in favor of that.
I thought “…take a breath” was kind of funny, btw.
Since this is College Confidential after all…

Very cool! And yes, now there is an actual college element to this thread!
Wesleyan should be very proud of LMM!
Some friends-of-friends (NU theater circles) were involved in Hamilton and present at the Tonys. It was cool to see their pics and stories in FB.
We’re like the Bailey family in “It’s A Wonderful Life” when George’s brother wins the Congressional Medal of Honor.
I know someone who attended Wesleyan with LMM. Does that count for anything?
Yes it does, FallGirl! My H was in a musical in undergrad with Jane Lynch and we talk about that!
My D was at the Tonys with several friends and celebrated afterwards with the friend who won in his category. It was a great evening!
A college friend of mine is the talent agent for some of the cast, and I saw a pic of her on Tony night dressed up with Daveed Diggs and LMM. Cool!!
Just bought my season tickets to LA’s Pantages theater. Hamilton was included in the package! I won’t be able to make it to NYC but I’ll settle for this!
Please remind me. Did anyone try to buy tickets for NYC last Sunday evening? I’m wondering how quickly they sold out (in minutes or seconds?)
I could have bought tickets but lost my nerve. I was trying at approximately 11 p.m. (Central time).
I got an interesting email from D on Monday, who I will be seeing Hamilton with this weekend; it was a screen shot of something with Soul Cycle (a national-chain, spin gym that offers occasional spin classes in Boston to the Hamilton soundtrack) and Hamilton. I know she had been following the Chicago locations to see if ours would eventually start offering it, so I thought, “Oh, this email is her telling me Chicago is now offering it. I’ll look it up later.” So she calls me yesterday saying, “You didn’t respond to my email.” And I said I didn’t know I was supposed to respond. And she asks me what do I think of her signing us up for a Hamilton spin class. I was really confused at this point - and then she pointed out to me the Hamilton spin class she signed us up for is in NYC on Saturday morning at 8:30! Anyone who knows me knows I am NOT a morning person, and my body will be on central time zone, not eastern, so this spin class will be at 7:30AM per my body’s circadian rhythm. Oh, and did I mention I’ve never done a spin class? This ought to be really interesting. She said, “You just adjust the tension on the bike so that you can pedal with the beat of the music.” At that point I thought, “I’m going to die Saturday morning before I ever see Hamilton.”
Oy, vey!
I told my trainer about it this morning (who knows I do NOT do mornings well) and he said he wants video.
Teriwtt, do they kick you out of the class if you just sit on the bike and listen?
I’ll be rooting for you, @teriwtt!
@missypie I did buy tickets for 2 separate dates in September. The email was sent at 11:11PM to me. I didn’t see it until around 11:50 and hopped online then. Some dates worked for me. Tried to buy more (had a seat limit per purchase) for the first date and was unable to buy more for that date, so bought some for a second date. After done with those two, I couldn’t locate any more tickets.
