Hamilton the musical

Just now joining the conversation because I just finished listening to the soundtrack for the first time. Our family loves musicals, and my kids were already into the show, so of course I had to see what all the excitement was about. I enjoyed it and I’m sure one day we will make plans to see it.

I love the concept —so unexpected. And like others here, I wouldn’t say I was a fan of rap, but they really made it work.

“So…we know soozievt, she knows her D who knows Pippa Soo, who knows the rest of the Hamilton cast. Like 6 degrees of separation, right : )”

So then it wouldn’t be out of line for me to expect front row seats for the Chicago show, right?! I’ll even be a pal and take anything in the first 5 rows. Thanks, soozie!

And it wouldn’t be out of line for me to expect you to save me a seat right PG? I’ll pay for my own plane ticket.

Of course not. LMM is reserving the entire row for me, so we can squeeze you in! That’s what soozie promised. You all read it right here.

ha! If only. I haven’t even seen the show myself! My D saw it when it was at The Public Theater, as well as on Broadway. She sees everything. The kids have all the fun. I remember when Hamilton was rehearsing for its Off Broadway debut at The Public Theater and she told me that Lin invited her to watch one of the final rehearsals…she was an audience of ONE.

This is a fun site: http://genius.com/albums/Lin-manuel-miranda/Hamilton-original-broadway-cast-recording

It contains the “annotated” lyrics - some of the annotations are from LMM himself talking about what he was thinking or referring to for each line of lyrics. Lots of musical references, homages to rap artists, messages in the musical styles chosen for each character. I could spend days here!

More fun stuff - this is LMM guest-starring as a hyperactive roommate at the psych ward on “House” in 2009-10.

My son and I were all over those House episodes at the time. Lin has just the saddest eyes!

If you have an hour, LMM’s co-author of the Hamiltome, Jeremy McCarter, discusses the book and the production process on Book TV: https://www.c-span.org/video/?409990-5/jeremy-mccarter-discusses-hamilton

I will find an hour for that, @2VU0609! Thanks for the pointer.

Saw Hamilton today. Although I missed some of the original cast it was really excellent – exciting and innovative theater.

And saw today that LMM will be on Drunk History with new Hamilton stories. Should be fun!

Happy, other than Javier, are any of the new cast member in place, or are the understudies appearing at this point? Did you happen to see the Chicago Alexander?

@missypie, three of my Ds saw the show on the 22nd and Javi was on but the others were understudies. I haven’t talked to them extensively yet about it as they’re travelling home today but they enjoyed the u/s, other than the woman who was playing Eliza, whom they thought was weak.

It’s finally my turn! My D and I are seeing the show on Monday night. I purchased these tickets in October and I’m so excited it’s finally here! My D, who is a huge fan of musicals, also talked me into getting tickets for School of Rock and The Color Purple. Should be a fun 3 days in NYC!!

Unfortunately I have not seen the show, but have attended a couple of the New York Historical Society’s “Summer of Hamilton” programs. Last night was “Exploring Hamilton’s New York” and previously I attended a program by an archivist from Trinity Church who shared Hamilton’s (and other characters in the musical) connection to the church. Lots of cool Hamilton artifacts on display as well at the New York Historical Society.

That’s great to hear, @college_query . We won’t be able to make any of the programs, but a visit to the New York Historical Society to see the Hamilton artifacts is definitely on the list of things to do. We already went to The Grange and the Trinity Church cemetery on our last visit

I’m sad that it’s unlikely that I’ll get to see Renee Elise Goldsberry again as Angelica but Mandy Gonzalez will be an amazing replacement, I have no doubt. And how wonderful for those of you who will see the show in Chicago to get to see Joshua Henry as Burr!

When we saw the show on Monday, Miguel Cervantes was playing Hamilton. Those who are going to the show in Chicago are in for a real treat! We also really enjoyed Lexi Lawson as Eliza. And Alysha Deslorieux was fantastic as Angelica. Now that I’ve seen the show, I know that I really need to see it again!

The running time of the show is just under 3 hours, correct? We have tickets for a Sunday matinee and I’m trying to decide if we should do brunch beforehand or dinner after.

I’ve been following ticket prices on stubhub as I have one I might need to unload. The NYC ticket prices on stubhub are still well over face value but definitely off the stratospheric prices they had been at.

Yes, you are correct about the length of the show. I do have to mention that the lobby was absolutely crazy before the show. On the left side they have a counter with snacks and drinks (and people lined up). On the right side, almost opposite, they have a counter selling merchandise (with people lined up). Then you have all of the people trying to thread their way through the middle to get to the aisles so they can sit. It’s a very poor set-up, so you might want to have a little extra time.
