Hamilton the musical

My only complaint about the documentary is that I was not feeling W’s insights about history’s long-term judgment. Really, W? You think there’s any parallel here, and that someday we’re going to put you on money and sing songs about your greatness? I guess you can identify with Philip Hamilton on the idea of starting avoidable, tragic violence over your dad’s honor.

Just noticed an email that a block of tickets for the NYC show have been released for 8/15 thru 11/5/17. Came out 3 hours ago.

Has anyone pre-ordered the Hamilton mixtape?

thanks to this forum, we bought tix for chicago this upcoming spring. looking forward to it.
going to look into that mixtape

I saw the Chicago production over the weekend. Burr was terrific. Different from Leslie O, Jr. but terrific nonetheless. Some of the comedy was more broad than on Broadway. Again, not bad, just different.

I hope the following comment won’t be viewed by anyone as blatantly political, but seeing Hamilton post-election did not feel as good as seeing it earlier in the year. In '15-earlier in '16, one could feel that maybe a corner had been turned, where we celebrated the contributions of immigrants, celebrated the talents of people of color, where we didn’t need our Founding Fathers to be white…and by “we” I mean the entertainment-consuming United States. On Friday, Hamilton felt more like a mere musical, rather than the embodiment of optimism.

“Some of the comedy was more broad than on Broadway.”

Can you give and example, @missypie, to demonstrate what you mean?

A Catholic friend shared this on Facebook. She doesn’t know the context any more than I do, so I would love to hear an explanation from those of you who can educate me. Regardless, this is one of the few things I have seen in the last week that has brought me joy.

Thanks for sharing, @2VU0609. Cantor Schwatrz has a great voice! The young woman next to him, Zoe, is adorable.

Jefferson was more exaggerated…was asking for laughs. (Not “mugging”, just taking some lines and gestures a bit further than Daveed Diggs.) King George milked it a bit more, too.

Easy to see the CHI Hamilton as scrappy and hungry; less easy to see him as Maria’s lover. (Note to costume department: No matter what they did on Broadway, never put a short man in a shiny green tailcoat and knee breeches…a definite leprechaun look.)

@2VU0609 “Adon Olam” is a closing hymn. There are many, many, many traditional melodies for it, but it can be sung to essentially any tune. This can be used for both humorous purposes (e.g. using a Christmas carol melody in late December), or more serious (e.g. using the melody for “Hallelujah” after Leonard Cohen’s death). The video is showing what looks to be the end of a bat mitzvah service; I’d guess that the young woman (the bat mitzvah) is a Hamilton fan. The synagogue is in NYC.

OK, maybe it’d be kind of hard to sing “Adon Olam” to “Guns and Ships”.

@SlitheyTove, thanks for bringing me up to speed! I watched the video several times yesterday and it made me smile each time:)

MODERATOR’S NOTE: I deleted the video of the statement the cast member directed toward Pence, because the comments were becoming political. Please don’t repost the video or discuss it again.

My DS LOVES Hamilton. He plays the soundtrack constantly. Was planning on getting him tickets for Christmas and somehow managed to get the $199 tickets for the whole family for a Sat night in Feb. Super excited! My DS could not believe it.

I have the windows open today. I live on a residential street. I just heard a woman walking by singing very loudly from the song, Satisfied, from Hamilton: “I have never been satisfied. There’s a million things I haven’t done. Just you wait, just you wait!” :>

Lucky you Testingearly. How did you manage that?

We talked up thread about the pace. Here are some metrics:

To many voters the ability to buy $199 tickets to any Broadway show is an impossible dream Think about it.

Same is true for a lot of things - pretty much all broadways plays, as well as nice dinners out, most cars, etc. It is a luxury item after all. It’s not alone in that regard. One thing I give the producers of Hamilton a lot of credit for, @TomSrOfBoston, is that they run a lottery for both their Chicago and NYC shows. How many marketers of high cost, luxury products can say the same?

When I was in line to get into the show, I was standing right by the line of lottery winners for the day, very happy group of people. Not saying its easy to get them, but these folks kept trying until they won.

Additionally, they have a program for high school aged kids from NYC: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/14/theater/hamilton-inspires-students-and-their-takes-on-history.html?_r=0

They also do street performances:

Not sure your point in calling out this show in particular, which everyone knows is a WANT not a need.

Can you name another luxury product or another broadway show that have made as many efforts to get their show/product in front of people?

@TomSrOfBoston :
Have you looked at how much tickets are to things like Rock concerts? Broadway tickets are expensive unless they (as all shows do) go on TKTS and you can get half price tickets (and even then, many are near 100 bucks). Anyway, I bought tickets at a local performing arts theater for a group I like (not a current top hitmaker, older group from way back when) and the tickets were 130, and tickets to a lot of shows are more than that, long gone are the days of cheap concert tickets. It is one of the ways I think the producers and unions on broadway are both greedy and short sighted, there is no reason why there couldn’t be an accord to be able to show a recording of the original cast once a show has been running for a while, to let a lot of people see the show. Eventually, of course, shows like Hamilton or any other Broadway show end up on road tours and are done at regional theaters like the PaperMill here in NJ, but it would be really great to allow people to see these shows down the line, could be streamed as well, but greed has not allowed this to happen.

If they really wanted to get their product in front of people they would tape it and make it available for free to PBS. Not the same as seeing it live but it would do.

I was not singling out Hamilton!. Just a reminder that such highly touted cultural phenomena are out of reach for the majority of Americans.
