Hamilton the musical

For those of you who saw it in NY, at the Richard Rogers Theater – how was it seeing the show in the “cheap seats”? I’ve gone on line several times to buy tickets, but the good tickets are a thousand bucks and up, while the ones in the back are a more “reasonable” $380, at least many many months out. Years ago I made a resolution never to sit in the cheap seats, but unless I do, I’m never going to see this show.

@VeryHappy The Richard Rogers is a relatively small theatre. I’ve seen it a few times in NY but always in the ‘good seats’ . I have seen other shows, though, at the Richard Rogers and the less expensive seats should be fine. If that’s the only way you can see the show, go for it!

I thought about getting tkts to Springsteen on Broadway for H’s 60th and they started at $1700! That idea went right into the bin.

@VeryHappy I saw the show with the original cast at the Richard Rogers. I did not have good seats–they were seats that we were able to get because my daughter was a friend/classmate of a cast member. We loved the show. Take opera glasses if you are worried about being able to see. We heard everything quite well. Plus, we got to go back stage after the performance with D’s friend.

We saw it with the OBC two nights before it opened and I think I paid $147 per seat. I bought the tickets as soon as they became available (think March for August or something like that), and not only was it before the explosion in ticket price, they were preview prices  My kids had wanted to see it at the Public before it moved to Broadway but had never been able to get tickets. Anyway, we sat, I think, in the 4th or 6th row center in the first mezzanine. I don’t know if those are the “cheap seats” but they were more than fine. It’s not a huge theatre and our sight lines were fine.

@VeryHappy, there is no need for you to HAVE to pay an outrageous price for seats. I have seen “Hamilton” twice on Broadway so far, and have tickets for this summer. Always paid list ticket price for seats via Ticketmaster, at first around $150 (with original cast) and never more than $240 (for my seats in Row D Mezzanine for this August). I budget myself and hubbie for one “Hamilton” performance/year.

Get yourself on the e-mail list for new blocks of tickets
go to https://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/2095830?dma_id=296&landing=c&awtrc=true&c=SEM_TMTHEATER_ggl_757729670_39715280157_hamilton&GCID=0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIocrN2cHM2QIVClqGCh2hmQklEAAYASAAEgLzavD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CKC7xenBzNkCFQyXyAodWOQKig
and sign up with your e-mail addy for “get ticket alerts” (in the blue box)
and be ready, when you get a notification of a new block coming up, to spend the morning of first availability by your computer.
Also, make sure you have an AmEx credit card (I got their no-fee everyday card) as sometimes AmEx cardholders get a slightly earlier date for buying tickets.

With my approach I do have to plan in advance, wait six months to a year to see the show each time I buy tickets, but I have no regrets – get decent seats at less than outrageous prices.

Hope you get to go without breaking the bank!

I’m another who signed up on the website to receive notification of new ticket releases and have bought 2 sets of tickets at face value. Even at face, I didn’t want to pay up for orchestra seats and bought more reasonable tickets in the front of the mezzanine.

Most shows now have a large area of centre orchestra seats that are premium pricing. So, while it’s possible to get ‘face value’ tickets, those premium seats will always be at a premium price, even when they first go on sale. Premium seating began with The Producers, and has spread through the years to virtually every Broadway show. It used to be that you could get a centre orchestra seat for a decent price. No longer. So, if someone has been a regular theatre-goer for a long time, they remember those days and long for those centre orchestra seats in the first 6-8 rows.

With Hamilton, as with some others, it’s a show that, in many scenes, will have a lot going on onstage at the same time. So a seat in the mezzanine will give you a different, and sometimes even a better perspective on what’s happening. There are some shows that I’ve seen dozens of times and in various parts of the theatres in which they played. It’s actually nice to try a different perspective sometimes!

I have seen the show twice in Chicago, once in the orchestra seats and one in the upper balconey. Of course, the orchestra seats were better, but it really was fun the second time watching all the choreography from up top!

Fans should check out Weird Al’s polka version of Hamilton. Google it since I wasn’t sure if I could link to it.

^ That Weird Al polka version is hilarious. I didn’t realize until I googled it that Miranda and Weird Al are actually good friends!

I saw Hamilton from the front mezzanine at the Richard Rogers and again in SF in the orchestra. Like UCMom19 I liked the orchestra, but the mezzanine did give you a great view of the complex choreography was terrific as well.

My D and her friend in DC enter the lottery in the Hamilton phone app for cheap tickets in NY almost every day. You find out the day before if you got them. They’ll just take the afternoon off from work and take the train up if they get them. Both have seen it, but of course would love to go again.

Hamilton fans, you need to hear the new “Hamildrop” with LMM & Ben Platt. It’s called “Found Tonight” and part of the proceeds go to support March for Our Lives. Don’t just listen to audio, search for video at LMM’s Twitter. All the feelings for this one!

If you both love Hamilton and The West Wing, LMM & Tommy Kail “appear” on a bonus episode of The West Wing Weekly podcast this week. They talk about how Lin was influenced by TWW and little lines & themes from the television show are dropped into the musical. They also have a great discussion on the cast visit to the real White House.

I know this is late but I finally saw Hamilton. It was excellent. King George was fantastic!! I went home and immediately went to iTunes. I was pleasantly surprised there was a hip hop Hamilton mixtape as well so I’ve downloaded both.

@partyof5 Did you see Euan Morton as King George? He’s a joy. He’s also the dad of Iain Armitage, whom you’ll know if you’re a Big Bang Theory/Young Sheldon fan.

@alwaysamom I saw it in Chicago. Funny you should mention BBT/young Sheldon, I LOVE both of those shows. I was very skeptical when I heard of Young Sheldon, thinking it would be a flop. Boy was I wrong! The young man who plays Sheldon is perfect!

I saw Hamilton in Chicago too, with a very musical-averse D. Halfway through the opening number she turned to me and said “Why aren’t ALL musicals like this?!”

@partyof5 Yes, he’s a very talented little boy, and a sweet one, too. His first acting job was in Big Little Lies, and then Young Sheldon. He plays the role very well.

@scout59 Not all, but a lot of them are! Creative, original storytelling with exceptional music. Hamilton wasn’t the first and isn’t the last.
