Been thinking about purchasing a hammock for our yard and thought this might be a good time of year to find a good deal on one since summer is ending…

I would like to suspend it from the posts (they are straight up, cemented in and extremely sturdy) of the daddy-made swing set we have. We would take down the swings and attach to each post. The area is very , very shady - underneath very tall pine trees.

Wondering if there is anything I should look for/ avoid. I think I would prefer not to have a fabric one - too much shade (promotes mildew) and too much tree debris to dirty it up. Would like a one-person hammock.

Any tips on what to buy, where to buy it, or what not to buy???

You can never have enough places in the yard to lounge. :)

About 10 yrs ago bought my dad one from lands end with a hammock stand. About same time brought one for our house from target–a lot less money. Mom covers dad’s to protect it. Ours sits out 24/7 in So CA. Both look great. I wash/ rinse off ours with a strong water hose spray. Both are the rope/knot type. I would go wth target again, rope is a bit less thick but as comfortable as dads. I think dad’s was $300. Ours less than a $100.

I know you said you didn’t want a fabric hammock, but that’s what I bought from Target a few years ago, and we don’t get sun in the backyard and it doesn’t mildew. I leave it out all summer and usually when it gets cold, or when I remember, I roll it up and put it away. I hose it off and it cleans up very nicely. It’s really comfy.

We like the woven Nicaragua ones… just google around. Warning - squirrels like to nibble their way across the strings of hammocks. We lost several until we screened in our upstairs porch to eliminate squirrel access. Now, it’s just lovely out there in the hammock. :)

Our hammock is from Costco. It is made of Sunbrella fabric, the same stuff used for gazebos, patio umbrellas and awnings, and I love it. It doesn’t get moldy, and dirt is easily washed off with a brush/soapy water.

I ordered a hammack from LL bean for my husband for Father’s Day. I ordered the polyester as opposed to the cotton so that it would be mildew resistant. It feels just like cotton. Also, this hammock was half the price of most other hammocks and has a lifetime guarantee. I think it was $99, but we already had a stand so this price is only for the hammock.

we have had a hammock on a stand for years.Have bought the cotton Target type ones and have had to replace them over and over.Broke down this year and bought the real Pawley’s Island handknotted one in the Duracord material over the Internet, google Pawleys Island Hammock.More expensive but so worth it.Sturdier, larger, moisture resistant.we had a horrible rainy beginning to this season but the hammock looks brand new.Its my H’s fave spot for a weekend summer nap!

I’ve been wanting a hammock for years, but have worried about the stands. I picture my boys wrestling in the hammock and one of them falling and hitting his head on the stand! Am I crazy?

We don’t have appropriately placed trees. I guess I could put in poles?

Ours is also made of the Sunbrella type fabric. We have had it for about 8 years and love it. My only advice is to go to the hardware store and get stronger chains and hooks - the ones that came with ours were pure junk.

I really don’t care for the “net” type ones…just not as comfortable.

I have a tradition on the first and last day of school. I take a pillow, blanket and book and spend most of the day in the hammock.

I will second Packmom’s suggestion on Nag’s Head hammocks…we have some of their hammock furniture ( not an actual hammock though ) love them all, rockers, swing chairs, etc. My husband has to do a little touch up this winter though one the wood

We never got around to getting a hammock last year, but spring is here and we are starting our sprucing up the yard, deck, patio for our graduation party! Still would like a hammock, but after looking my big concern now is finding something to work with the length between the two posts we currently have - it is only about 11 feet and it seems that most hammocks I am seeing with the spreader bars need about 13 feet.

The posts can’t be moved or changed. Any suggestions - 13 feet seems SOOOOO long! Can the spreader bars be “shortened” in any way??
