Hand lotion??

D just called…between the cold weather in NYC and her waitress job (frequent hand washing) her hands are becoming chapped and dry. She’s asked if I have any suggestions for hand lotions/creams. She thought perhaps something that nurses use…I couldn’t help, but thought I’d put it out for suggestions…

Anyone?

[AHAVA - Hand Cream for Men](http://ahavaus.com/site/men_handcream.html)
[AHAVA - Dermud - Intensive Nourishing Hand Cream](http://ahavaus.com/site/dermud_handcream.html)

Aquaphor

Also, she should slather it on at bedtime and sleep with cotton gloves on her hands. Really.

Funny you should ask. I just made a great discovery. You need to find this WITH the Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) and NOT with the hand lotions. It sells out fast. It is by Vaseline and is called Deep Moisture Creamy Formula. It’s in a white tube with blue and black lettering. It is basically a creamy Vaseline. I know it sounds gross, but it is miraculous. I actually put it on my face before I go out and run in the cold for protectin.

When I had two kids in diapers and it was winter in Massachusetts, my hands got so dry they cracked and bled. The home remedy I used then, and still use, is to slather my hands with Bag Balm, put on rubber gloves, and do the dishes with as hot water as I could stand.

I also routinely put Bag Balm on my hands before I put on my gardening gloves.

She needs to read the ingredients. Shea Butter is a good one. I am fond of Neutrogena’s Sesame Oil which absorbs quickly. The important thing, though, is to apply it right after she washes her hands. Lotion holds moisture in, it does not add moisture. As a waitress, it is also important that she uses something that has no fragrance.

I even swear by regular old Vaseline. I’ll have to try the stuff MOWC mentions. I use Vaseline on my feet in the summertime when I wear open shoes all the time and my feet get so dry, and then I sleep with socks in. By morning (2 nights if they’re really bad), a miracle has been wrought.

IMO:

Aquaphor 2. Cerave 3. cetaphil

I agree with VeryHappy.

VH - Aquaphor…any idea of the cost? I suppose not too much as it seems to be in the baby care department.

MoWC - certainly can’t beat the price, and it’s available everywhere…

Keep 'em coming!

It’s around $5.99 for maybe a 6-oz tube. It’s very Vaseline-y in consistency, btw. Not lotion-y.

^^14-oz. jar at Coctco.com for $11.99

Old nurse Here,
if you promise not to laugh, I use Vitamin A&D iontment. You can get in in the baby section in any grocery or drug store. It doesnt smell the best but it works.

Big 14 oz. jar of aquaphor runs about $15-18. It is sold in smaller tubes too. I buy the big jar bc I need it!

There is a coupon for Cetaphil bought at Costco. I think it is 2 20 oz. packs and you get 4.50 off, but I don’t what Costco charges for it. I got the coupon the mail with a booklet of their other coupons. You can use the coupon btn. 2/9-3/1/09

Edit: BB thanks for that tip.

I’m forwarding all your suggestions (edited versions, of course).

These are great, and Vitamin A&D ointment is probably a great idea.

This happened to her the summer she took photography and was forever in chemicals. I like the cotton gloves concept, and I will try the socks idea for myself!

The best thing that my family and I have used is the Norwegian Formula Hand Cream by Neutrogena.

The cotton gloves do work. I can’t stand having them on too long, but I have tried it and it really does seem to help speed up the healing process IMO.

Body Shop ‘Nut Butter’ is great and health food store ‘Calendula’ ointment by Hylands is also vaseline texture without the petroleum and soothing too

I second the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula. Nice scent, not too greasy, and it works wonders.

Aveeno. You can buy the travel-size lotions at your local Target.

My Vaseline Deep Moisture Creamy Formula 4.5 oz. tube was $3.99 at Walgreen’s.

I want to stress that this is NOT Vaseline moisture or body lotion that is with the body/hand creams. This stuff is on the shelf with the regular Vaseline (which is in a different part of Walgreen’s).
