What are some good science programs where one can do hands-on activities (especially research)?

I’m really like to get some research experience this year (and a competition-worthy research paper would be awesome too, though unlikely), but there are so many programs out there and it’s hard to tell what’s really worth it. And although I’ve seen a lot of the popular CC threads on RSI/Clark/Simons/Garcia, I don’t think my chance of getting into these is close to nil (I haven’t done any research or science competitions before, so…)

Something not too expensive would also be preferable. My family makes enough to disqualify me from financial aid, but we can’t afford to spend $10k on a summer program (that might not be very good) either.

Any help or stories about your own experiences are appreciated! Thank you!
