Handwriting in College

For an extremely long time, I have been ridiculed for having bad handwriting. Though my teachers have coped with it, many of them have either had talks with me or (more seriously) taken away from my grade because they can’t read my writing (this usually only happens with in-class essays) Conversely, I often write great essays while TYPING…

I took some courses at the comm. college and was told that essentially, college professors allow laptops and desktops for essays

So, my general question: In college, are you generally allowed to use laptops or desktops for essays? (specifically in-class essays, not essay questions.)

P.S: I’ve tried to improve my handwriting, if anyone has any advice, it’d be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sure. You won’t believe how many people there are just like you in college. Sometimes even professors have the most horrible, illegible handwriting you will ever see.

All of my professors have completely illegible handwriting, and most of them are used to having to decipher student handwriting. Just do your best, and it’ll be fine

Some schools allow students with “disabilities” (I am not insulting your handwriting or saying that your have a disability, so please don’t take offence to that) to take tests in an alternate room with a proctor and I am sure if you contact your school’s Academic Support they’ll give you some help…

talk to the professors, show them how you write. Offer to write in class essays on a laptop. See what they say. If the school has a strong honor code, the professor will probably let you write on a computer, or they will decipher what you wrote.

One of my professors argued that all geniuses have bad handwritting, and proceeded to scribble on the board.

i’ve never had to handwrite an essay or paper in college, so’d say my professors don’t even know what my handwriting looks like…except for a couple short answer quiz questions or a math class…no one cares in college

professors have the worst writing in the world. I’m still trying to figure out what my english professor commented about on my final paper!

tell them its your destiny to be in medicine.

ok, so it seems that my doubts are eradicated…I guess everyone has bad handwriting in college.

I guess the best thing I could do is ask a professor before the class begins if there is any in-class essay writing, in which case I can ask to type.

Actually scandal, I do want to go into medicine haha.

All doctros have horrible hand writing. almost like their own language/.

you probably won’t be able to use a laptop because you can put too much information on it, and the prof would then have to also allow everyone the same opportunity, so it’s unlikely.

why is this in the ‘college life’ section? is handwriting going to be a major factor in your college experience? please say no

where do you suggest it goes?

the OP wants to know whether handwriting quality will affect their work in the classroom.

I don’t think it is a relevant topic here at all (but then again many of these threads aren’t). It would be pretty easy to just ask a representative from the school they are considering, as there is no way that random kids on the internet will be able to correctly predict what his or her specific professor will allow.

Exactly, because representives know every professor in their university and their policies.

I have a severe mechanical disorder in my hands, its very hard for my hands to perform small motor functions. Typing, tieing a shoe, buttoning buttons on shirts and absoutley horrid handwriting. Most people cant read it all, and believe me, handwriting is a huge factor in my life. I have had teachers refuse to grade my papers or force me to redo them.

As for college, the only thing I can suggest for you is to literally type everything. The only classes that I dont type for are math classes. Short answers, questions from workbooks type EVERYTHING.

If you have to hand write, write big, skip lines, and get extra paper. That’s what’s helped me be a bit more legible.

lol…my handwriting sucks also…it’s not completely illegible but I write small and really fast…and it’s even worse if I have to use wide-ruled paper…for some reason I can only write on college-ruled paper…

let’s not even discuss my signature lol…it’s like chicken scratch and it’s different every time lol…I want to go into medicine so who gives a fluck?

You guys seem to be circumventing the problem. Why not actually try to improve your handwriting by getting a workbook?

LaTeX. It rocks. It’s a markup language that allows you to produce great looking typed equations, among other things.
