Hanover vs Purdue Costs

<p>Hi, my friend is going into college next year and was wondering what you think about cost. They are looking at Hanover and Purdue. They would much rather go to Purdue but their parents will make them go to Hanover if it is cheaper. Could ya give us some insight? Thanks!</p>

<p>Some details:
Hanover (Private College) Cost:
~$30,000 tuition (In State)
~$10,000 room and board
They already have awarded them with $10,000/yr academic merit scholarship from Hanover. They just interviewed for an art scholarship as well which is a maximum of $3,500/yr.</p>

<p>Purdue (Public University) Cost:
~$10,000 tuition (In State)
~$10,000 room and board</p>

<p>Their family gross income is roughly ~$85,000/yr. Their sister will also be going to graduate school next year in California (2 children in college)</p>

<p>So, what do you think? Which school will be cheaper in the end?</p>

<p>Having a sibling in grad school doesn’t count as “2 in college” on FAFSA. On FAFSA, you don’t count grad students. Grad students are “independent” and will be a “household of 1” on FAFSA. </p>

<p>So, your friend’s parents may be wrongly thinking that Hanover will give more aid because of the sibling. </p>

<p>Looks like Purdue will be cheaper. Your friend needs to fix his FAFSA if he put 2 in college. The problem is that Hanover may wrongly give him extra aid, then when it’s realized that the sibling is in grad school, the aid will be taken away. At that point, the family may find itself having to pay a LOT more than they thought.</p>
