Hapless Hannah prepares new list

JeepMom, her mother and I are afraid of her and usually sleep with the light
on.

As most realize , I’m somewhere here between truthful and trying to be funny, but D is a teenager and as such has a common teenager malady. She is a deeply loving and kind child with a “hugging” tendency and a friendly disposition .She can be aware and active about charitable causes and the plight of others less fortunate while IMO not concentrating enough effort on those in closest proximity to her.Her mom for one. I doubt she is the only teenager so afflicted.

Driver, wouldn’t Williams be much more of a “sports” school than Middlebury?

Heck no! They’re huge NESCAC rivals. Check out Middlebury ice hockey! The comment I mentioned about Midd “trying to be Williams” was actually made by a Williams high muckety-muck while I stood on the sidelines at a Williams/Middlebury matchup a few years ago! Middkids are often very athletic and outdoorsy…same as Williams.

I know a little bit about Hanover, so maybe I can be a bit of help there. I am from Indiana and I have several friends who went to Hanover.

Academically, Hanover is a solid school and is strong in the sciences. The level of academic seriousness of the students is pretty wide ranging. Some students will be very serious about their education, while other students are likely to treat their time at Hanover as a four year cocktail party (that is, if they last the entire four years). The person I know who was an Econ major there complained that he felt there were too many students at Hanover who lacked an academic focus. However, the Chemistry major I know (and wife of the Econ major) had no such complaints and felt like the academics at Hanover were very strong. By the way, they both went onto grad school, live in Chicago and are doing quite well for themselves.

Hanover is also well known for putting together generous aid packages. Given your daughter’s academic credentials, I bet that Hanover will offer her a ton of merit money. My guess is that out of all of the schools you have listed, Hanover will end up being the most affordable, if that is a factor.

While I have never personally been on the Hanover campus, in a rare moment of unanimity my parents indicated that the two most physically attractive campuses they ever visited were Hanover and Kenyon (my brother played D3 football and they went to virtually all of his games).

My impression is that if your daughter is as serious and self motivated as she appears to be, then she would likely get a fine education at Hanover.

icemaker, I think you’ve got it!! That was spot on. We spent enough time on campus to feel the same about Hanover.

I still want to know if we can call her Curmudgette. Curmudgianna? Curmudgella?

We call this “No taking out your bad mood on those who care for you.”

Are you sure carleton is in a dry town? I could have sworn I saw a liquor store on my way into town to visit.

I like Curmudgette myself Alumother.

In honor of the thirty-five Jane Fonda interviews on the tube this week, I propose Mudge-arella.

ROFLOL. Dude I knew we could count on you. But if you ever show her the movie and tell her this she may dunk you through that basketball hoop in a New York minute.

Hi and hope you enjoy the college search with your D as much as I have with my S. He was admitted to a couple of the schools on your list. Feel free to PM me. Also although I see you did not opt for Southern schools, Wake Forest is very good for premed with a medical school adjoining and the science courses are taught in small classrooms with full Profs. They do have summer research available for undergrads and their student body is really into being active and fit. Great School Spirit and many Middle Atlantic state kids who get behind their teams. University of Richmond is also a very good undergrad school for premeds who prefer a smaller LAC…beautiful campus, too.

Faline2, can you describe the area around Richmond or Wake? I just found out this week that Richmond wasn’t really in Richmond proper and might be a possible.Thanks.

Has your D seen Davidson? If she liked Furman she would love Davidson.
Merit is given only to the cream of the crop, but I hear they are also generous to athletes.
My D did get nervous when she found out they provided laundry service.

Richmond is in a tony neighborhood that has a traditional feel on the north side of Richmond in what is a suburb rather than “in town.” UR has recently upped its rates to match those of Wake and other comparable schools. I have neighbors who are successful Docs and Lawyers who got strong starts there. They left the Baptists in the early 80s and are quite interdenominational. Campus is handsome and very well maintained, classes are small and personal. Admission is selective. They have a Law School and an unusually large endowment which means they can offer good need scholarships. Students tend to be somewhat affluent and southern or middle atlantic state families. A couple deep south traditions are still in place and they have frats. I like the City of Richmond but it is really 10-15 minutes south. Five minutes north is a huge new upscale area mall and the requisite six lane road of everything else that surrounds a mall…

I vote for Mudgie.

PS
I think your daughter is a bit overqualified for some names on your current list, although I greatly encourage you to apply to a couple true matches and also grow fond of them!, and you have some schools with very high rejection rates, too. For instance, St. Mary’s is a great small state school, but it is in a hugely boring although idyllic location and so it is still largely in-state kids without a real sense of diversity from across the USA. I think your daughter-- given good essays and recs is competitive for more selective schools.

Never saw your first list, and think your daughter well qualified to have the Williams, Carletons on her list. As more of a safety with good merit aid, D-3, liberal to moderate, rural, I mention Denison, but wonder if that was something you already considered and dismissed.

Mudgie is really cute.

C’mon now. What makes all you fellow parents think that Cur’s D wants to have any nickname linking her with her Dad?

Cur - hope you can get this on track soon so that you can resume your position as college founder/pres.
