<p>One of my former coworkers was on that flight. Since yesterday, I’d been following on FB her trip from Nairobi to her Detroit hometown. Then 5 hours ago I noticed her FB status said she said: “has touched down in Detroit, but can’t exit the.plane due to a security breach. Merry Frakkin’ Christmas to me!!!”</p>
<p>Then, when I went to cnn, I saw the breaking news…</p>
<p>The same friend was posting yesterday that holidays are the perfect time to fly because there are few crowds…</p>
<p>I’m glad she’s safe…</p>
<p>As if Detroit couldn’t have more bad news this year…</p>

<p>A friend is supposed to meet her bf who is flying from Detroit… I bet the TSA in Detroit will be sending every single passenger through that 3D body scanner they’ve installed a couple years ago. It used to be optional. When I was “randomly chosen” for additional screening and asked whether I’d like to go in that machine or prefer a pat down, my reaction was, “I’ve had enough X-Rays at the dentist, but I would not mind a good back rub!” </p>
<p>I’m very glad no one was hurt, and the plane landed safely.</p>
<p>If it is found that that the erstwhile terrorist had black powder in his pants pockets we will now be required to turn our pants pockets inside out when we go through security (not sure why we don’t do that already). Airport security is designed to prevent the threat that was, not the one that will be.</p>

<p>That was exactly what D1 said to us this evening; she will be flying back to Boston on Monday.</p>
<p>I was on that flight last week. Amsterdam was in holiday chaos mode due to big storms and cancelled flights. Security was pretty loose. I had all my small liquid containers in my plastic bag ready for inspection and never was inspected.</p>
<p>I have heard that security will be tighter, especially on international flights. My d leaves on Tuesday for an overseas study. She is not looking forward to the security, as it is already pretty brutal at O’Hare.</p>
<p>One of the news stations (CNN?) was reporting this morning that people were being patted down, each and every one. I say get to the airport early…I’m okay with more security if it actually prevents something like this from happening again.
The question is whether it will…I doubt it.</p>
<p>My son and a friend just flew this morning from Portland to San Jose (CA), a flight my son makes quite often. I asked how security was: “no different” was the reply.</p>

Among other steps being imposed, passengers on international flights coming to the United States will apparently have to remain in their seats for the last hour of a flight without any personal items on their laps. Overseas passengers will be restricted to only one carry-on item aboard the plane, and domestic passengers will probably face longer security lines.</p>
<p>Are syringes allowed in carry ons? You can’t have tweezers but a syringe is ok?</p>
<p>And this last hour in seat restriction is to prevent you from mixing a bomb in the lavatory? I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. This is “security” ? (psssst… if the plot calls for chemicals to be mixed in the lavatory and turned into a bomb, and you can’t do it during the last hour of the flight, then the bomb will be mixed BEFORE the last hour. These terrorists are smarter than you think!)</p>
<p>Better solution: Install security cameras in the lavatories!</p>
<p>Husband “joked” this morning that “now you will not only have to take your shoes off for security, but you will now also have to take off your pants”…</p>
