Happy Labor Day

Since living in Taiwan in the early 1980s I always feel funny saying “happy Labor Day” at this time of year (September), because there and in most of the world Labor Day is May 1st. But, anyway, I hope you are enjoying a pleasant holiday if you are living in the United States.

How many colleges are holding classes today? I was astonished to find out that Alma Mater’s main library is open this afternoon (I will visit the campus) and I have heard that some colleges have plain-old, regular scheduled classes today. Alma Mater starts classes tomorrow, just like most public schools in Minnesota. (Public K-12 schools in Minnesota CAN’T start until after Labor Day, by state statute, but I think the U of MN Law School starts in August, as so many schools around the country do.) How goes it at the school you know best? Is today a day off? Have classes already started?

After edit: Oops, I just saw the other thread about school on Labor Day. The holiday greetings still apply. If a mod wants to merge this thread with the other thread, go right ahead.

Same to you tokenadult. I see you haven’t taken the day off. HaHa. Can you imagine the US having labor on May 1st and singing the Internationale? It makes me giggle to contemplate it.

I start teaching at community college tomorrow. I have six classes (two full-time load, two extras to feed the tuitition beast) and haven’t done any course outlines yet. I would say my day will be labor intensive.

For us Labor Day is called our Official Day of Mourning. Just laziness. I love teaching.

Ah, Happy Labor Day, my first day back on the job! And yes, we celebrate May 1st.

I was in Starbucks this morning … (since I am working next door in my shop doing orders and animal care even though my shop is closed) and thinking that lots of the labor labor force – retail and food service and health care – doesn’t get the day off.

Happy Labor Day if you are lucky enough to be labor-free!
